The idea for this project began on a trip I took in 2007 to El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua. I was part of a very small group traveling with an international NGO that had been working in that region for over 50 years. I was shocked to see the extraordinary poverty and suffering in countries so close to our borders. By the time the trip had come to an end, I knew this was a story I wanted to tell. In 2008 after extensive research and countless interviews, I partnered with MVI Productions (with whom I’ve produced many award winning programs) and began the project. Over a two year period of time we filmed in Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, and parts of the United States. We began the project without financial support except our own.
Goal of Documentary:
The goal of A Bridge Apart is to put a human face on the thousands of migrants who try to enter our country from Mexico and Central America, and to show how economic development in these countries can have a huge impact on giving these people an alternative to migration.
Current Status of Project:
All of the filming for A Bridge Apart has been completed. The script is written and we have completed an off-line of the program. The documentary can be completed and ready to release for distribution and broadcast within a matter of weeks.
What Kickstarter money will be used for:
Monies raised from Kickstarter will enable us to finish the documentary. It will be used for: narrator fees, professional talent for voice over the Spanish interviews, music rights and clearances, license fees for broadcast and distribution, online editing, surround sound design / mixing, and extensive program deliverables required by the Networks. We will not receive any funding unless we receive 100% or more of our goal.
What happens if we raise more money than our targeted goal?
Great situation to find ourselves in!! We would use the extra money to pay for the hundreds of uncompensated hours and out of pocket expenses the production team has spent working on this program.
Distribution of A Bridge Apart:
Our goal is to present this documentary to as many people in as many places as possible! We will accomplish this by the following: national and international television broadcast, theater releases in LA and NY, public and private screenings, film festivals, and educational distribution to schools, universities, and a myriad of other groups and organizations interested in the documentary's message.
