"Every BODY Can Dance" is a collaboration between Ryan Daniel Beck(choreographer) and Jason Ray Brown(yoga anatomy specialist) to find an anatomy based approach to dance education. Traditional technique assumes that the study of ballet or jazz dance, will always produce an effective outcome. However, many people have found that their anatomical structure seems to limit their ability. Consequently, they become frustrated and eventually quit. Our project will look at individual's anatomically structural limitations and peculiarities first, and then fashion a personalized method of study that will allow them to express through dance. The project will culminate in a community workshop at the Manhattan JCC in March 2012. This event will be a free event to all.
The money will fund our research over the course of six months, as well as material costs for the free community workshop event next year. We have heard many people say "my body is simply not built for dance." And our goal is to say, "every BODY can dance, its simply a matter of finding the language and method that communicates with YOUR body, in a way that is anatomically correct." Our bodies are incredibly diverse, each with their own set of peculiar limitations, as well as unique abilities. However, if a person feels as though a certain technique is at odds with their physical structure, it may be a case of trying to fit a square peg in a circular hole.
By differentiating the permanent structural limitations from the more malleable areas, every BODY is given the chance to dance to their fullest potential, without the frustration of trying to change the unchangeable. Knowledge of YOUR anatomy is power!
