CATCH THE WALL is a boundary bending new play about bounce music and the New Orleans charter school movement. Help us workshop this piece to make it the best it can possibly be!
When champion bounce MC, Benefit, dies unexpectedly, 6th graders Cleo and Justice set out to make a dance video so their mentor's memory can live on. But when Benefit's ghost begins possessing their teachers, the girls must push back against their charter school's expectations and the dangers of their neighborhood, and find a story they can claim as their own.
This exciting workshop presentation will examine how dance and video interact in the play. It will also serve as a sounding board for the script itself as we collect audience feedback both in the room and online with the #NEWPLAY hashtag.
CATCH THE WALL's workshop will be presented June 21 and 22 at the Contemporary Arts Center in New Orleans. On June 22 it will be broadcast live on #NEWPLAY TV, an international web TV channel for new works theatre, at 7:30 CST. The workshop is free and open to the public.
CATCH THE WALL will premiere in full in February 2013 in New Orleans. The play is being built to tour, with the intent of sharing this unique piece of New Orleans with venues across the nation.
Workshop cast: Corinne Williams, Tenaj Jackson, Jimmeraz Johnson, Gizelle Merrett, Monica R. Harris, Kristin Witterschein, William Bowling, Gamal Chasten, and Venita Williams
Workshop director and design team: Chris Kamenstein, Dave Greber, Eli Grove, Lennie Hsaio, Grant Ingram, djQ, Pam Roberts, Ro Tyler and Evan Spigelman
Your donations will help us pay for:
1. The technology needed to film the video in CATCH THE WALL, use 3D mapping to project that video texturally across the stage, and be able to live stream the workshop performance to #NEWPLAY TV.
2. The set which is being built for use in the full production as well as the workshop, costumes, props, space rental, and honorariums for the designers and actors who have committed their time to this project.
3. Keeping the conversation going between CATCH THE WALL and the community by hosting story circles among New Orleans charter school students, new and veteran teachers, and bounce dancers and MCs.
4. Spreading the word about the show by building a website and promo video, inviting national producers to the February production, and maintaining contact with national media, in hopes of bringing this great show to other cities.
