About

Since 1998, Mosaic has been committed to presenting the cultural diversity of the African diaspora as rendered in literature. In 2003, we launched the Mosaic Literary Conference as a way to connect our community to educational resources that explore art, culture, and literature.

The conference, which happens on Saturday, November 25, at the Bronx Museum of the Arts, is a free annual grassroots event that features, workshops, panels, and films, and a great opportunity for the educators, students, program administrators, and parents to learn ways to integrate books and reading into the lives of students, strengthen literacy, and develop education strategies.

To present the conference and exhibitions we need to raise $12,000. The more we raise, the deeper our commitment will be to building a literary arts organization that is socially engaged and dedicated to  developing reading and education programs.

BLACK DOCUMENTS: MOSAIC LITERARY CONFERENCE

Black Documents: Mosaic Literary Conference will explore contemporary presentations of black identity in literature, media, and photography --particularly the work of photographer Jamel Shabazz-- and how self-affirming imagery and text can counter negative stereotypes. The day will include workshops, panel discussions, a screening of Ava Duvernay's award-winning documentary 13th, and conclude with a conversation between artist Liza Jessie Peterson and Jamel Shabazz.

November 25, 10:30am to 6:00pm
Bronx Museum of the Arts • 1040 Grand Concourse, Bronx, NY

The conference will also be complemented by photography exhibits Jamel Shabazz: Black Documents and Black Documents: Freedom.

JAMEL SHABAZZ: BLACK DOCUMENTS

The photography exhibition Jamel Shabazz: Black Documents will serve as a counterbalance to the piecemeal aggregation of media images that frequently misrepresent large sections of the American population. Shabazz’s work renders blackness not as eroticized mythology or criminal aftermath, but as heroic iconography that pushes diasporic Africans toward the center of the American photographic aesthetic. This exhibit is presented as evidence against contemporary media narratives that often place blackness as culprit -what James Baldwin referred to as “the bloody catalog of oppression.”

On view November 25 to December 15, 2017

BLACK DOCUMENTS: FREEDOM

Jamel Shabazz: Black Documents is complemented by Black Documents: Freedom, photographic works by Laylah Amatullah Barrayn, Lola Flash, Danny Ramon Peralta, Edwin Torres, and Michael Young. Their photos offer a contemplative appraisal of conversations between lens and subject, and give further agency to black lives. All share a similar aesthetic path as Shabazz while exploring a variety of social, gender, and urban geographies. Exhibitions curator: Laura James.

Risks and challenges

Hi all, I'm Ron Kavanaugh. In 1998, I started Mosaic in my Bronx apartment with a desire to present writers of the African diaspora. It was developed out of a shear love of stories, poetry, and essays that reflected my reality -lived and hoped. Mosaic has featured Tiphanie Yanique, Saeed Jones, Lucille Clifton, Bernice McFadden, Tayari Jones, James Baldwin, Nicole Dennis-Benn, Walter Mosley, Staceyann Chin, Nicole Sealy, Chimamanda Adichie, and Willie Perdomo among others.

Since then I've formed a 501c3 nonprofit, and raised funds primarily through donations and some grants. In 2003, I launched the Mosaic Literary Conference, started developing lesson plans to help educators and parents connect books and culture, and recently created One Book One Bronx as a way to get my community reading.

This year's conference is the most ambitious project in 20 years. and like Mosaic and the other programs I aim for the highest production quality possible. The event includes workshops, film, exhibits, panels, artist talks, poetry, essays, a lesson plan, interviews, catalogue and will serve as black documents of fierce negritude.

Your support will make it happen the right way. As we approach 20 years diverse voices need unique platforms. Please support our cause.

Thank you!
Ron
