Nasty Feminist: A Game for Women Who Are Nasty and Know It

Nasty Feminist is a hilarious and timely social party game that harnesses the power of politics and pop culture to allow women to say what they really think. Through a series of prompts and actions, the game gets you and your crew laughing and talking about the issues of today. And because it’s based on your improvised responses, you set the tone—comedic, serious, irreverent, or downright offensive.

In Nasty Feminist, each player can be funny, strategic, and creative, while learning, venting, and plotting with friends. Don’t know a name on a card? Ask. Feeling angry as hell? We won’t judge. Got a plan to save the world? Girl, we need you! Each card looks amazing, too. There are beautiful illustrations and an all-over design, and each deck comes in a nested box you’ll love to show off.

To win, you’ll need to outwit your fellow players with your comedic timing, with your sleuthing abilities, and by not getting trumped

Each player takes turns drawing from the deck and follows the prompts on the card. There are several different types of cards you can draw:

To start the game, each player is dealt one prized Nasty Feminist card, featuring 1 of 20 women who have changed American history, and you’ll earn more as you play. And just like in real life, the more amazing women you have on your side, your chances to win are greater. This card keeps you in the game if you get the dreaded…

You’re Trumped card! This is the death card which means you’re out, loser! It’s really the worst card you can get. Getting trumped is truly, truly terrible. But, you can trade in a Nasty Feminist card to stay in the game.

To earn Nasty Feminist cards you’ll need to win Statement cards, which are unfinished statements about politics, celebrities, and current events. Each player will finish the fill-in-the-blank statement with their best improvised verbal answer and the judge (the person who drew the card) will pick their favorite one. The winner gets to keep the statement card. You can trade in 3 of your earned statement cards for a Nasty Feminist card during the game—so, unlike the 2016 presidential election, smarts count for something here!

Other cards include Attack cards, which throw a wrench into your game—like attack of the mansplainers who just waste your precious time telling you what you already know.

Scam cards allow you to steal a card from a fellow player (hey, I didn’t say this game was totally fair!).

Visionary cards let you peek at the deck and strategize what’s going to happen to the next players.

With a Shuffle card you can mix up the game.

And the rare Girl Gang card helps you stay in the game when maybe you’re not doing too hot (just like your real girl gang that always has your back)!

The game can end in two ways: the last person standing or the person who has the most Nasty Feminist cards once you’ve gone through the entire deck wins.

Nasty Feminist is a social party game with 110 cards in a nested box. Final number of cards may increase when stretch goals are reached.

For 3-9 players. Play time is 45 minutes to 1 hour.

100% designed in the USA by a team of awesome women.

The nested box measures 5.5" (L) x 3.5" (W) x 2" (H). This may increase in size when stretch goals are reached and extra cards are added.

Like a lot of you, I was in shock watching the election unfold. I felt pissed off and fed up seeing a clearly unqualified man win praise for ignorance, bigotry, sexism, and just plain grossness. During the third presidential debate, I quickly mocked up a Nasty Woman shirt and had it online before the debate was even over. I expected to sell 4-5 shirts to some close friends, but woke up to 10,000 orders. Overnight it became a rallying cry for women all over the world. It started off as a funny f*ck-you to Trump, but became a global community. I sold tens of thousands of shirts in over 80 countries and was blown away when it was worn by celebrities like Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Katy Perry, Will Ferrell, and Kristen Bell. From sales of the shirt, I ended up donating over $130k (and counting) to charities.

In making the shirt and hearing from thousands of women around the world, I realized there was a community who wanted to be in conversation with one another, fight back, and have fun. So, for the one-year anniversary of the shirt, I created the game Nasty Feminist.

The process of going viral taught me a lot. Like, that people will find your cell phone number and call you at 3am about shirt sizing but also that small gestures can have a big impact. Over the course of developing and playtesting Nasty Feminist, I’ve seen people talking and having conversations they may otherwise not feel comfortable participating in. I’ve noticed that a 45-minute game can oftentimes last much longer, because everyone wants to tell more jokes, related stories, discuss politics and pop culture, and share information with one another. Time truly flies by when everyone is busy laughing and sharing stories.

Nasty Feminist also puts the power of comedy back into the player’s hands. Instead of relying on racism, sexism, misogyny, and transphobia like some other social games, Nasty Feminist doesn’t make its players the punchline. Instead, players are given the spotlight to generate their own responses, tell their own jokes, and set the tone that works for them and their friends.

Nasty Feminist also enables moments of randomness to occur. By drawing cards, you never know which prompt you’re going to get, meaning comedy and strategy are only 2 components of the game.

My hope is that in playing, you will make your voices heard, grow louder, and have a greater impact in shaping the world you want to see. What begins as a joke can turn into actionable steps and before long those steps are a movement.

I’ve teamed up with She Should Run, a nonprofit organization whose goal it is to get 250,000 women running for elected office by 2030, so that conversations that start during Nasty Feminist can turn into greater access to political office. I hope the game can be a spark for you to articulate the absurdity of the present and in doing so change the future. Pledge money raised on Kickstarter will not be donated to charity, as per Kickstarter rules.

I’m coming to Kickstarter to fund the first round of production for the full Nasty Feminist deck in a super cute and collectible box. My hope for the game is that people will gather all over the country to play and that Nasty Feminist will grow and change over time with extension packs and special editions. It could start with a few friends gathered around the table and lead to simultaneous game nights at bars everywhere and live events.

The $25k will fully fund the first edition run of Nasty Feminist, including design, illustration, printing, assembly, fulfillment, and shipping. I am continuing to playtest the game until November 5, then there will be a final copyediting round, getting a green light from a lawyer, and then going into production. Production is expected to take 4 weeks and fulfillment will begin immediately afterward. Expected delivery is January 2018. If you are hoping to give the game as a holiday present, I will be making a free downloadable card that you can give that will include information about the game, Shrill Society, and She Should Run and you'll also get a PDF of the game before the holidays.

Hi, I’m Amanda, creator of the viral Nasty Woman t-shirt and Nasty Feminist game. I’m an unabashed pop culture-junkie, especially interested in the intersection of feminism + mass culture. Whether it’s through the lens of contemporary art, film, literature, or new media—I’ve always cared about the ways that women and femme-identifying people can harness the power of pop culture to explore larger issues and create positive change.

I have over twelve years experience in contemporary visual arts, successfully organizing programs related to my work in feminism + pop culture. I’m a co-founder of Pelican Bomb in New Orleans and have led art and education initiatives at institutions across the country. At the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, I taught an undergraduate course on pop culture and philosophy, as well as traveled nationally to present my unique work on Twilight fan communities and the importance of female-led pop-cultural movements.

My work has been featured in over 100 publications including The Washington PostForbes, Marie Claire, Allure, Teen Vogue, and New York Magazine’s "The Cut".

Nasty Feminist is a product of Shrill Society, which aims to make people, particularly women, laugh, think, and hopefully become more socially active through product design, collaborations, and events. Like our flagship collection of Nasty Woman products, Shrill Society is a play on the word "shrill," which has been historically used to rob women of power. We intend to take it back.

Risks and challenges

As a first-time gamemaker, a challenge has been developing a game that works well, makes sense, and can be played in a reasonable amount of time. Through playtesting, I’ve tweaked rules and cards in order for the game to function well. I have an in-studio fulfillment center that can process several hundred orders. If you all really knock this out of the park, I’ve established an agreement with a shipping company who will handle all fulfillment. I’m using a local printer to ensure that I can oversee the process and press-pass in person which allows for quality control and mitigates any unexpected results that might arise if the printer were located far away. Another challenge is timing from production, to fulfillment, to delivery. Once print production is established, the timing is more or less out of my hands, so I can’t guarantee an “arrive by date,” in case there’s a holdup with printing or shipping. I’ll keep everyone updated on our timeline as the Kickstarter closes, going into production, and when shipping starts. A final challenge is that cards may change once approved by a lawyer, so please note that all cards shown are working prototypes that may look different once finalized.
