Do you love belly dance?
Do you like new, fresh ways to combine steps and moves?
Do you get excited by the prospect of dancing but have a hard time practicing by yourself?
Belly Dance Practice Dice are a great way to spice up your practice, have fun dancing with your friends or for challenging your belly dance students in whole new ways. They are also a beautiful gift for the dancer in your life!
How does it work?
The set is made up with dice, each die has it's own focus.
1 die with upper body isolations
1 die with lower body isolations
1 die with basic foot patterns
1 die with timing elements
1 die with emotions
The dice can be used all at once, or in different combinations. You can invent your own favorite practice game, or pick a suggestion from the accompanying hand-out for solo practice. The teacher sets comes with a booklet with various exercises in duo's or groups.
Dance is a creative process and to allow these dice to be used by dancers of all levels and belly dance styles. The description of the moves and steps is kept clear. For example, to point out the direction of a move, arrows are used. It is up to you if you want to make the movement big or small, or in what direction you want to do the movement. I did not use terms like half-time and full time, instead opting for changes in speed (slow to fast) and terms like 'fast' or 'slow'. No matter your level, pick a speed that you feel is fast or slow and you're good to go!
About the product
Let's get down to the details. The biggest challenge is to create this product while keeping it affordable. In order to create a dice set that is durable, feels good to the touch, is beautiful and doesn't break the bank I made various prototypes. The finished sets are made with 16 mm square polymer dice with rounded corners. The rounded corners make it easier to roll the dice and they feel better when handled, compared to square cornered dice.
As custom printing the dice is a complicated, expensive and requires a high volume, these dice are made using custom designed vinyl transfers, finished with a coating to improve the durability. Each set comes with its own drawstring pouch for safe keeping and easy transportation.
I had a lot of fun making these prototypes and inventing ways to use these sets with my students. I hand punched the stickers for the first set, got to learn a thing or two about off set printing. The production cost to bring these dice on the market are around $3000,-. That is a huge financial risk for me and my family. It is very inspiring and heartwarming to hear the reactions from the belly dance community for sticking my neck out and attempting a project this big! In order to get the production process starting I am investing half of the start up costs myself, and I am hoping to gather the other half through Kickstarter.
What if we raise more funds?
1500-2000 all backers receive the link to a video where I explain the various moves and footwork pattern, plus a couple of extra suggestions for using these dice
2000-3000 All backers will receive an eBook that contains the basic steps and moves, inspiration for structuring your practice and a list of my personal favorite belly dance music
If we raise more... well, let's just say that first I'm going to throw my hands up and dance around my living room. I'll add extra bonus rewards if we close in on 3000+!
Can't join the kickstarter right now?
Once the basic funds are raised, the Belly Dance Practice Dice will also be available through www.bellydanceresources.com for a regular price of $15,- excl shipping.
Risks and challenges
As the product has already been made into 4 prototypes and thoroughly tested, I believe the deadlines that I set for creating the product are realistic.
My biggest challenge is to dedicate enough time and energy to this project to make the deadline of finishing and shipping the dice. If my whole family comes down with the flu or we have a family crisis, the deadline might be pushed back a couple of weeks. That's why I set the delivery time on 2 months after finishing the kickstarter: I am aiming on getting the product ready and shipped out in one month.
The second biggest risk is shipping the items. I have no control over the various companies all around the world that process the letters and packages. Your dice might be delayed in the mail, or get lost. To mitigate the risk of mail getting lost, shipping the teacher package comes with track & trace, and the wholesale package shipping price includes track & trace and insurance. For single sets standard shipping is available to keep shipping affordable. My experience with standard shipping is that 99,9% of the letters arrive safe and sound. If your letter or package happens to get lost, contact me personally so we can resolve this.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
