Enter a Magic world....
No one from our realm can tell you where Edelwhite Academy is, the premiere school for witches. The only way to get there is to step through a magic mirror, something only witches can do. Yet somehow, you've managed to make it here...does that mean you've got magical powers?
The headmistress finds you and leads you by the hand through this ancient establishment. Old ornate mansionhouses of stone and wood cast curiously warm shadows over you. High above, a Goliath clocktower, which you can't even see the top of, chimes out the hour. Students in tidy white and blue uniforms scurry to class, chattering about the latest gossip and the best way to stir a transformation potion
"So?" says the headmistress "would you like to stay here and learn to become a witch?"
After spending time at the school, you make lots of friends and go on many adventures. But... something seems off. The hallways are positively humming with mysterious energy. The more you explore and learn about the history of the Edelwhite, you realize dangerous and dark secrets were hidden from the students long ago. As the sun sets and the skies begin to get cloudy, you worry that those secrets will resurface very soon. Will there be anyone to stop it?
The gameplay of Charmixy centers around puzzle combat. Two opponents go head to head and attempt to clear each other's victory hearts from the board. By matching up elements on the board, players are able to clear a path to the hearts! But, once a heart is exposed, how do you destroy it?
Before going into battle, players can equip up to 4 different charms, special spells that aid in matching up tiles, destroying victory hearts, and tripping up the opponent! Every charm does something unique, and your play style can vary wildly depending on your favorite charms to use in battle.
I challenge you to a magic duel!
There are lots of ways to get better at dueling. In local versus mode, connect with someone else who has the game on their phone and face off against each other. You can win special prizes and points for dueling lots of different friends!
In the single player mode you can challenge fellow students who have their own fighting styles and techniques, or go beneath the school and fight monsters in the dungeon! Unlock new charms and find cool loot this way by battling your way through the game!
Be the witch you want to be!
In Charmixy, you play as you! Or at least, you play as the witch version of yourself. You can create a custom avatar of any race, any gender (or no gender), and any magical lineage you like! It's important that you feel comfortable with the way you look... just as long as you wear a school uniform, too (don't worry, it's very cute!)
Meet your fellow students!
You're not the only one attending the academy. There are lots of other witches in training learning alongside you who you can befriend, rival, and even romance!
Say Hello to some characters:
More things to do
Tired of dueling? Don't worry, there's so much more you can do at the academy. Take a potion brewing class, go on a date with that cute student you've had your eye on, or pop down to the shops to get a dandy new accessory!
We have been working on Charmixy for almost half a year now, and it's such a great game that we want to share it with everyone...for FREE! It's important to us that the game is open and accessible to lots of people. Unfortunately, developing a game costs money, so that's why we're going to Kickstarter. By funding the game's development now, you can make it free for everyone. Don't worry though, we're gonna make it worth your while for backing us! Just check out those rewards on the right!
Our costs are broken down in percentages that go into budgets for each individual department. That way, no matter how much money we earn, everyone's budget increases at the same rate.
- 50% programming— in California, a good programmer can make over 90,000 dollars a year. Mike "SaltyJustice" Upshall, our BRILLIANT programmer, is fine with a measly 7,500--just enough to make rent. Take it from me folks, that's a steal! We've dedicated the majority of our funds to programming because it's so important.
- 20% fees, marketing and rewards — there are a lot of backend costs that can get in the way of production. Kickstarter takes a percentage, and app stores charge to put games on their market. We want to be prepared for these and more, so we set aside some money to handle any and all of these costs.
- 10% on music— three incredible musicians have agreed to make the soundtrack to our game! Their music is crack for our ears. We want to pay our musicians what they deserve for making such excellent audio art!
- 10% writers— Charmixy has a story and lots of character interactions to make the world feel alive and full of personality. We want to pay our writer Marionette what he needs to do just that!
- 10% art — "it would be nice if I could die without student debt" -Chicmonster, the game's artist
Check out the fabulous backer rewards that you, yes you, can get for helping us reach our funding goal. The game is completely free, but that in no way means that backing isn't worth your while!
The base game is awesome, but if we have the funds, we can do so much more to make Charmixy even awesomer! Here's what'll happen if you awesome folks give us more than the intended goal:
20,000 (5000 more than base goal) - classmates who grow with you
In the game's campaign, you start out at the bottom tier and participate in magic duels until you're the best witch in school. Once you've defeated a classmate in battle, you have to find someone else who is stronger to challenge. But what if your classmates were also getting stronger alongside you? Maybe you defeat them one day and the next day they challenge you to a rematch, this time with a new set of charms and a faster reaction time?
At 20,000 we'll be able to just that; writing out a system so every classmate you fight against is also improving their skills as you progress. This will constantly keep you on your toes, and brings a lot more gameplay, challenge, and story development to characters. You'll be a sharper player for it!
30,000 (twice as much as base goal) - broomsport and animal raising minigames
There's so much more to being a witch than just mixing potions and casting spells. you have to learn to ride a broom of course, and what about all the fantastical beasts that occupy the world?
At 30,000 we'll introduce two additional minigames to Charmixy, broomsport and animal raising. In broomsport you'll be flying around on your broom trying to collect the most points for your team. You can play in the single player campaign in team tournaments against other witch schools, or play head to head against someone else with the game on their phone
With animal raising, you'll be able to keep eggs that you find while in the dungeon and put them on a small farm where you'll take care of them and feed them into full grown magical creatures! Once they're fully grown, you can keep one as a pet to fight by your side in dungeons, or release it back into the wild. Earn special prizes and accessories for all the different kinds of animals you have raised!
50,000 (35,000 more than base goal) - Seasonal and Time-Based Events
As the year progresses, you might notice lots of changes around you, both in the weather and the people you interact with. Well, why shouldn't Edelwhite Academy do the same?
At 50,000 dollars, we'll be able to make the world of Charmixy react to different times of year. Leaves will fall in the autumn, flowers will bloom in the spring, it snows in winter, and the sun shines in summer!
Not only that, but we'll write in additional quests, visiting shop owners and story lines to be played out at specific times of the year. You'll be able to kiss your sweetheart under the mistletoe at the Christmas ball, or fight the Great Pumpkin Lord at the Halloween Festival. Participate in the summer intramural Broomsport games, and get a wicked sunhat when the Hat Vendor passes through town!
Meet the fine folks working on the game!
Tess Young (@thechicmonster) is scheming, slinky, green-faced ghoul who loves to design games. Day in and day out she locks herself away in her castle, cackling madly to herself at all the brilliant ideas that pop into her head, and scribbling pages and pages of designs, notes, storyboards, flowcharts, and systems. She’s good at her magic, yes—but more than anything, she wants to share its wonders with everyone and encourage them to be the brightest and best that they are.
Salty Justice, the team’s codemancer, is a giant walking suit of mechanized armor, capable of amazing feats of digital magic. All he has to do is consume the countless pages of systems, story, and art that Chic feeds to him, and he is able—through what one can only assume is seriously advanced sorcery—to turn them into a complete interactive experience. He also makes a great lasagna.
MarioneTTe is a Wordweaver, trained in the secretive arts of spinning narratives. From short mystery thrillers to epic tales of yore to all the tales that fall in between, his pen stitches each letter to its word with such neat precision that few question the magic of his yarns. He tends to question the excessive use of iron supplements in robot lasagna, but is quite pleased with the extra portions of cheese.
RJ Quinton (soundcloud) is a warlock musician with the soul of a wanderer. When he isn’t slaying evil beasts for fun, he is slaying it at the guitar and keyboard, composing and recording seriously majestic music and sound that will echo the halls of Edelwhite Academy for eons to come.
Leila “Woofle” Wilson (soundcloud) is a tiny, magical woodland creature that can be lured out of her den by the sound of music. By day, she sleeps, by night, she conjures up music of all sorts melodies and rhythms! She is known to dance, but only when no one is looking. Sometimes, she mistakes the music for food, and eats it.
Kamu (soundcloud) is a mystical gardener of sorts, growing magical, musical plants (which pesky foxes often eat.) Kamu’s magical plants are said to produce the most beautiful sounds in the world. Oddly, most of the plants resemble corn.
Risks and challenges
Charmixy is a small game, but even small games can have big challenges. these are the risks we foresee and the plans we have to overcome them:
The team is small: with a small team any game seems like too great a challenge, but we assure you we aren't biting off more than we can chew! We have worked on many published games and spoken to developers in our situation who have successfully and unsuccessfully fundraised their game. We are experienced developers and we've made ample accommodations for this project to be developed
The game is completely free: this kickstarter is going to raise money to make the game completely free, but are we really taking into consideration how much money it costs to make a game? Yes. You'll notice that we have budgeted a whopping 20% into production fees that will definitely cover any overhead costs. in addition, we are not offering any physical rewards to backers which often take huge chunks out of the raised funds. Lastly, we have prepared features that in the unlikely even we fall short of money, offers in-app purchases to players that does not interfere with core gameplay at all, such as cosmetic items and side quests.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
