Unboxing, Shipping Update, and FAQ

We're so close now. We've been integrating all the hardware/software feedback from the developers in the Partner Preview over the last few weeks. Changes include tweaks to calibration settings in firmware and stronger adhesive for the foam.

We hope you're ready-- Dev kits should start shipping out to the earliest backers on March 29th (we may slip a day or two in either direction depending on customs). When your kit ships, you'll receive confirmation info so you can track your Rift as it makes the journey from Oculus to your front door.

We expect to deliver roughly 1,000 - 1,500 units a week until we've fulfilled everyone's orders, and weekly shipments will ramp up as we go. If you haven't already, you should confirm your shipping address as soon as possible to avoid shipping mistakes/delays ( Once we begin processing your reward, your shipping information will be locked down!

Shipping 7,500+ development kits will take time, especially for the international backers out there. Just know that we’re moving as fast as we can to get great hardware out the door. No one wants the dev kits to arrive at your doorstep more than we do. Thanks for your patience!

Unboxing the Dev Kit

Other Odds and Ends

How's the Oculus SDK coming along?
Developers from the Partner Preview are already using the Oculus integrations for Unity and Unreal Engine 3. We've also had plenty of developers successfully make their engines Oculus-ready using the core Oculus SDK. We'll have more details for the community later this week and early next week leading into GDC!

Will DOOM 3 be Oculus-ready in the future?
A lot of people have been asking us whether DOOM 3 will support the Rift at a later date. We don't have any information on this, that's why we decided to provide replacement rewards and refunds. Remember that if you'd like to "wait" on DOOM 3, you can buy it anytime on Steam using the Steam Wallet credit replacement reward option.

I can’t find the replacement reward section when I log into the Oculus Order Manager! The replacement rewards are meant to replace DOOM 3 BFG Edition. You will only see the Replacement Reward section in the Order Manager if you were supposed to receive a copy of DOOM 3 (either by pledging for a Rift Development Kit or being one of the first 1,000 pre-orders on our website). Sorry for any confusion!

I want to buy DOOM 3 but I’m outside the US and it’s more than $20! If you're outside the US and you'd like to use the Steam Credit to purchase DOOM 3 but it's more than $20, please email us at and we'll sort it out!

How much will the Oculus Latency Tester to cost?
The Oculus Latency Tester should cost roughly $100, but we don't have an exact price yet. We're working with the manufacturer on balancing a limited run (~500 units) with keeping costs low.

Can I donate my DOOM 3 replacement credit back to Oculus?
If you'd like to donate the money back to us, select the Oculus Store credit option. It's up to you whether you use it or not (though we should have some neat Oculus items available soon).

I requested a refund but I haven’t heard back from Oculus.
Sorry for the delay--we’re answering emails as fast as we can. Sometimes messages from get caught in the Spam filter, so make sure to double check there first.

When will t-shirts and posters start shipping?
Posters and t-shirts should start shipping within the next two weeks.

GDC Next Week

We're looking forward to sharing the latest Rift demos with you at GDC next week! Be sure to swing by the Oculus booth and meet the team if you're there.

Thanks for all the support! We couldn't have made it this far without you, and this is just the beginning.

cool looking product, I pledged for a dev kit and I'm at GDCSF trying to check it out... Is there a way to get past this ginormous line? Does everyone here have a pledge in?

    2. Trevor on

How do you find your Kickstarter backer number? I seem to be coming up nil.

Love the extra touch with the cables and adapters - feeling the effort you guys put into it :)

Great news! Excellent video, too. I'm really excited that it all comes in a nice case, as I was figuring I'd make my own carrying case for it.

I have a question about order numbers versus backer numbers. My order number shown on the sales update page doesn't seem to match up with my backer number at all, as it seems considerably greater. Are those just randomized or are they proportional somehow? I'm trying to estimate the date I'll receive my kit, just to try to stem the tide of my excitement right now.

@tehgameveda: William Gibson has ton of mentions!…

      Thanks for the update guys!
The whole package looks gorgeous, glad to see a suitcase, definitely useful for demo purposes!

so as backer number 90XX i should expect to wait 7-10 weeks? I hope I can at least get in and look at the sdk before mine comes.

What is truly great about Oculus is this has been an internationally leaning release from the start. Though if you had added a box saying " fly to the USA collect it in person from our HQ in person" I am sure the US Visa dept and a few airlines would thank you for it .. in fact there is probably someone camping out there now ..have you checked outside your window Palmer? Seriously good luck with the launch , cannot wait 2 weeks or so and mine should ship, till then I will have to read through all my 90s Cyberpunk and Steampunk novels come no one mentions William Gibson anymore .. am I old or what ? .. love the foam support by the way..

Excellent news, love all the updates. Looking forward to future discussions in the sdk forum!

    11. Martin Vigneron on

Yay! All the info we needed. Power adapters included! Nice black Hard Shell case (which reminds me of of the dreamdevice case from Inception) 10/10 would read again!
So does someone know how long it will take to ship from Oculus HQ to germany? I am one of the first 100 backers but I have a feeling I might get it later then everybody else :(

    12. daft_inquisitor on

Well, now that the development kits are ready to roll out, what all needs done before production of consumer units starts? I'm pretty eager to get my hands on one, even though there's not much to do with them yet.

I'm guessing an estimate of a year from now isn't too out of line, is it?

Awesome, great to finally have a reliable date on when they'll all be shipping! I wonder, since it seems that I'm quite high up in the order # list (my initial pledge didn't go through - didn't realise until near the end!), will there be any options to upgrade shipping for international pledgers? I'd quite happily spend another $50 or so if it would reduce the 2-3 week shipping time a bit.

Either way, can't wait to get my hands on the SDK and start playing around with it! Roll on 3 months time!

Thanks for the update... I'm willing to wait a little longer. Sounds like I'm looking into April until my unity ships (5.5K) I'm really looking forward to seeing your Unity integration.

      Great news!
Any word on the planned international (Canada) shipping method? Things get mighty pricey if items get shipped via generic courier services!

    16. Cloudhead Games on

Congrats Oculus!!! You guys did incredible work! We're so looking forward to getting our devkits so that we can get The Gallery: Six Elements truly and fully off the ground!

    17. Chris Legasse on

Not only is the gallery supporting the rift, but the gallery was design FOR the rift. It will likely be the best gaming demonstration in VR in this early itteration. I honestly cannot wait to play it, and i cannot wait for my kit to arrive. Glad i can at least have a rough estimate of when to expect its shipment.

    18. Darren Myers on

You guys should have really included The Gallery in your update so that more backers who dont have you on facebook can see the game, specially considering its 1 of the only a few games that i know of that is supporting the rift.

    19. Ryan McClelland on

Appreciate the communication. Months from now, no one will remember is if it was a few days later, only whether or not it was Awesome.
