Team Fortress 2 in the Rift

Yes, it's true: Valve announced today that Team Fortress 2 will have a new "VR Mode" that supports the Oculus Rift, available this week!

Team Fortress 2 is one of our absolute favorite games (it’s Palmer’s most-played game on Steam!), and we're really looking forward to playing it in VR with you. We couldn’t ask for a better developer showcase.

Exclusive Rift Dev Kit Hat for TF2

The icing on the cake? To commemorate this momentous occasion, Valve created an exclusive new TF2 hat: the Oculus Rift development kit.

Now you may be saying: "Wow. Could this possibly get any better?" The answer: A resounding "Yes".

Valve has generously donated these fashionable Rift hats to the Oculus developer community. If you backed the Kickstarter campaign at any level, or if you pre-ordered a Rift development kit from our website before April 1, 2013, (and haven't refunded/canceled your pledge/order) you'll receive a code to redeem your very own TF2 Oculus dev kit hat.

Wear it with pride. You earned it.

Team Fortressing in VR

Soon you'll be cruising around in Team Fortress 2, wearing your dapper, limited edition dev kit hat, stealing intel, capping points, and fragging fellow Oculus developers.

Valve has done an incredible job bringing TF2 to virtual reality. That said, it’s a fast paced, intense experience. TF2 wasn’t originally designed for virtual reality and skirting around the map at super-speed in VR isn’t for everyone. You’re going to want to ease yourself in and acclimate over time.

Valve is also planning on sharing what they learned bringing TF2 to VR in two GDC talks:
- Why Virtual Reality is Hard (And Where it Might be Going) presented by Michael Abrash.
- What We Learned Porting Team Fortress 2 to Virtual Reality presented by Joe Ludwig.

      Mmm, well source engine support, that should mean the rest of the titles will follow shortly right??? I hope so! L4D2, I can only imagine what that game would feel like with the rift!

      This is fantastic! TF2 is one of my favorite multiplayer shooters of all time! Man, I can't wait to get a consumer Rift into my hands and spend my days jumping around like a crazed idiot!

      ...oh, and probably play some TF2 while I'm at it. :)

      TF2 is a great showcase for 3D and VR gaming , Portal 2 is also but VR requires more than headtracking. Looking forward to Abrash and cos VR comments. I have been preparing for VR by combining LEAP Motion hand tracking, Kinect Voice Recog and Zeiss headtracking ..and managed to do all this without latency issues on would you believe the Xbox 360 and PS3 games ..playing Child of Eden,Panzer Dragoon with finger tracking and headtracking , Halo with voice recog,hand recog ,headtracking and legacy control in OLED 3D . I have been gaming with hmds now for nearly 2 years , I do not see many of the barriers others do and we need to come at this from a developer and consumer point to make VR a success. I set out to combine multiple VR controls on legacy hardware to show that we can game well without latency and lag issues and also to suggest the idea that we may end up using the Rift for something totally different to what the creator V'jer sorry Palmer (hi) envisaged. I never thought I would be playing Halo in ghost free 3D with finger, voice ,headtracking on my Cinemizer OLED hmd when I first got hold of it ..long live the VR revolution

      This is so much better then having it in Doom 3. so THANKS to all of you! I really appreciate this, and I'm REALLY looking forward to play my favorite game withe oculus rift.

      Thank you for the update, but cant really say that this makes up for the DOOM 3 disappointment.

      TF2 was the wrong game to implement for this clearly, we needed a slow paced single player game especially for demo purposes. Something like Portal 2 or another single player game would have been a much better choice.

      This is amazing news and to top it off they have 2 GDC talks to discuss the process of porting to VR! Very excited to get my Dev kit!

      That is great news! I was unsure when I heard that an environment may not be available for release, but as much as I made a financial pledge and honored it, I feel you have also reciprocated. yay!

      How about you tell me when my kickstarter reward is going to ship. Is the SDK broke or something? There has to be a reason around the slow roll out

      TF2 wasnt even on my list of games I want to play in VR, so I'm hoping all the work Valve put into it can be quickly ported to other Source engine games!

      But anyway; Sploosh! Or whatever the male equivalent is.

      Will the Unity demo (of the small village) be included in the Dev Kit?

      @Daniel The GDC talks are generally recorded and posted some time after the conference. They're usually behind a paywall, though, so...

      Michael and I will also be posting our slides after the conference.

      Thanks for the update, liked the interview with Mr. Ludwig as well. Some of the comments in the engadget article are really sad though. I generally avoid that place.
