Update #16

Oculus @ CES 2013 Recap

What an incredible trip to CES 2013! An enormous thank you to everyone who stopped by for a demo, to all the fans who supported us during the show, and most of all, to you, the backers that made this happen!

What's especially cool is that our CES demos were built on the same software stack that developers will be using come March (Oculus SDK, new Oculus tracker, and Unity and Unreal Engine 3 integrations).

There are plenty of fantastic articles from the show, but we wanted to share a few of our favorite awards, quotes, and videos with everyone who helped make this happen.

Awards

The Verge – Best in Show, Best in Gaming, Reader’s Choice

“Virtual reality has long been the ultimate promise of technology — the magic mandala, a doorway to the infinite. But the thing is: it never happened…. The Oculus Rift actually delivers on the promise, and then some. It’s really, really amazing. Truly and honestly a revelation, a trip, a rabbit hole. And I’m going in. Forever. Goodbye universe. Hello universe.”

IGN – Best Prototype

“Offering some of the most compelling virtual reality experiences we've ever encountered, Oculus' Rift stole the show and our hearts.”

Wired – Best of CES

"If you're of a certain age, you remember the first time you sat down at a computer terminal, opened a browser, and tried the World Wide Web. It was a before and after moment. Although Usenet and other internet communications technologies had been around for years, the web was instantly recognizable as something new and powerful and different that built on all that had come before.

And so is it with the Oculus Rift."

Laptop Magazine – Best Gaming Device

“We're excited to say that Oculus Rift is delivering on the young company’s lofty promises… Oculus Rift is an evolution of gaming itself, and we love where it’s heading.”

PCMag – Best Gaming Gear

“It's one of the most immersive visual experiences I've ever seen in a gaming or home entertainment device, and I can definitely see it making action games like Skyrim and Far Cry 3 more exciting, and horror titles like Slender more pants-wetting.”

GameFront – Best of CES

"The Rift represents the future of gaming, or better yet: the future of PC interfacing. This isn’t a gimmick like 3D — the Rift is going to fundamentally change the way you think about entertainment. All the VR madness from the 90's was leading to this moment, only now we have the technology to push it from laughable flash in the pan to a concrete, exciting, mainstream reality. The Oculus Rift is our favorite piece of tech from CES 2013, hands down."

Impressions

“Not only was this the coolest thing I saw at CES, but it's possibly the coolest thing I've seen ever. As someone who has always been interested in the idea of VR headsets, and always heartbreakingly let down by the reality of VR headsets, I admit I took a rare (for me) CES meeting on a lark. I had heard something about their successful Kickstarter, but honestly, I figured it would just be more of the same.
I was wrong. Not sure I've ever been more wrong. Even in this hand-built prototype stage, the Rift is amazing.” – Geoffrey Morrison, CNET

“The Rift is certainly one of the most amazing things I've seen at CES this year - hell, in any year. It's not really possible to describe what it's like to use it, but as soon as I put the goggles on and turned my head, I think my mouth dropped. It's flat-out awesome.” - Dan Nosowitz, Popular Science

“I haven’t been this excited about a piece of hardware with the potential to change gaming since 3D hardware acceleration took off. And I believe this could even be bigger.” - Don Woligroski, Tom’s Hardware

“Arguably the most important thing about the Oculus Rift is that the displays take up your entire field of view. All of it. You put the headset on, and the only thing you can see is the world that it's showing you. The effect of this is immediate and dramatic, because it fools your brain into thinking that you're somewhere else. Really. It's amazing” – Evan Ackerman, DVICE

“Even using aging tech like Unreal Engine 3, this castle landscape felt real, to the point I wanted to reach out and grab a falling snowflake, or try to touch the cold, stone pillars holding up a decaying building… In the past, I simply played through worlds. I moved through them. This one made me feel like I was physically in that space. Living in it. Unable to look away, because it was all around me. It’s immersion on an entirely different level.” – Richard George, IGN

I'm so excited to get it :D. However your schedule are no longer right? You said that starting from January 28 you were building 500 pieces/day until February 10 because of the 4 weeks vacation of the factory. Does it mean that it will add a 4 weeks delays? Have you started the full production yet?
I don't care if I need to wait longer, I just want to know it.

The oculus resolution is stated to be 1280x800. Is that resolution per eye, or for both eyes combined?
I was also curious what hardware you were using to develop this?
Our team is interested in building a PC for development and would like to get an idea of how much we need to budget for it.

After reading the reports, I'm even more excited to get a headset ... though I'm now wondering whether or not I should tear it apart and design my own housings as I was thinking, or get back into game modding so I can see my 3D in a whole new virtual light.

Got any spare exterior parts I can play with; first shots, untextured runs? I'm right down the road.

Hi ! Firstly congrats , secondly a few questions . Is the 60 FPS a prerequisite of Oculus enabled games? What happens if the game dips below 60 FPS will the sensor fusion algorithm adjust to compensate , i.e. increase or decrease latency to match in game action..if you have head tracking out of sync with the game? Also the resolution. Does it have to be fixed to 1280 by 800 , or will the Oculus scale down 1080p or other resolutions to 1280 by 800. Is the in game resolution of games actually 640 by 800 , or a scaled down version of a higher res ..as happens with other hmds. If games are being rendered at 640 by 800 , 60 FPS should be possible even with non expensive gaming hardware. Lastly the display.. this seems to be close to phone displays..therefore would it be possible to power it through an external battery ..like todays phones have..one step to making it portable ( and eventually wireless)

As a hobbing game-dev with a full-time normal job I didn't go for the full headset, but pledged a minor sum to help and keep track of the project updates. I am so happy for the very nice progress and great feedback from the tradeshows. Good job guys.

You guys are insane. The Verge video (the very last) almost killed me with the desperate feeling of being super jealous of the guy trying the goggles.

Hey, can you guys clarify your plans for a Linux SDK? It was part of the original kickstarter pitch, but I only see mention of a Windows SDK. With Linux gaming picking up with the Steam console I hope you guys are on the ball :)
