Hawken to Launch Oculus-ready December 2012!

With less than a week to go, we’re thrilled to share an exciting announcement with our Kickstarter backers: Meteor Entertainment and Adhesive Games have partnered with Oculus to launch their incredibly evocative mech shooter, Hawken, in virtual reality with the Rift on 12.12.12.

Check out our announcement video for the all details from Mark Long, CEO of Meteor, and Khang Le, creative director of Adhesive!

We're huge fans of the mech genre and we couldn’t be happier to announce that the best-looking mech game in years will be running inside the Rift. Even more exciting is that Oculus developers will be able to experience Hawken in virtual reality from day one.

Now, with Doom 3 BFG Edition and Hawken, Oculus developers will have two incredible showcases demonstrating well-designed VR gameplay on the Rift right when they receive their developer kits.

Hawken in Virtual Reality

  • Everyone with a Rift will be able to pilot their Hawken mech in completely immersive, stereo 3D virtual reality.
  • An entirely new way to play Hawken which includes updates to gameplay, input, the cockpit, and the heads-up-display.
  • Hawken will feature an exclusive Oculus VR cockpit that let’s the player look around inside the mech, independant of the mech’s direction, in full stereoscopic 3D.
  • Hawken is free-to-play, which means that anyone with a Rift can try Hawken in virtual reality on 12.12.12.

As big fans of Hawken, it means a lot to us that Hawken will be the very first original new IP inside the Rift, especially as a great example of what’s possible when developers combine the power of Unreal Engine 3 (UE3) and the Oculus SDK.

Developing with the Rift

Since our Kickstarter is all about developers building great games for the Rift, we’ll be sharing details with the Oculus developer community throughout Hawken’s VR development. This may include extra notes on the initial integration in UE3, virtual reality gameplay design improvements, or general suggestions for making the best-possible VR game, all based on our experience with Hawken.

Thank you!

We want to really thank everyone who’s supported this Kickstarter so far. You’re the ones making all this happen. And special thanks to Mark, Khang, and the entire crew at Meteor and Adhesive for being some of the first to help us change gaming forever.

Only 4 days left... Talk to you soon, Kickstarter!

PS. Don't forget: I’ll be doing an AMA on Reddit tomorrow, Aug 28th, at 10am PST. Hope to talk to some of you then!

      @gannebamm: yes, looks like it

    2. Creator gannebamm on August 28, 2012

A very big question for us Unity3D lovers is: Do we need the pro version of Unity to get our ideas Rift-Ready?

    3. Creator Shazbot on August 28, 2012

Can you give us some more information on Unity integration?

    4. Creator Joseph Amos on August 28, 2012

I would love for you guys to get with the Dot Hack creators and Sony for the first true dot hack mmorpg with PS move and navigation support!

    5. Creator Rick R on August 28, 2012

A word of advice, I think your AMA should be in the IAMA subreddits, not the AMA. AMA is meant for more intimate, low-volume attention while the IAMA is for celebrities or high publicity folks.

I'm more than thrilled! I've been pouring myself into game programming in anticipation of this revolutionary piece of hardware!

    11. Creator Hugo Tremblay on August 27, 2012

How awesome is this? So awesome!

As someone who can't see in 3D, I hope you can turn it off though.

    12. Creator gonggeer on August 27, 2012

Yes there will be a lot of HC gamers buying this prototype, but that wouldn't be
so bad.Thoese big companies will buy one or two just for fun.But also they will be watching. If this
thing do looks promising, they will step in.

    13. Creator Barry Hill on August 27, 2012

Was just thinking that a mech game would be perfect, backed the rift nonetheless, then got an email update about Hawken a few hours later... *tears of joy

    14. Creator Benni Klomfass on August 27, 2012

so how many of the 4500 people are developers? any update on that/how many will be working on the sdk / future games and what the tineline/lineup is?

that would be more interesting than just another game imho . . .

    15. Creator kilogold on August 27, 2012

Does Adhesive Games have exclusive access to the Rift SDK, or is it publicly accessible?

    16. Creator Modeus on August 27, 2012

Anyone who doesn't see the future here is looking through a keyhole.

    17. Creator Think Heavy on August 27, 2012

I got to play HAWKEN at E3 this year and fell in love with it. This is ridiculously amazing news. I'm so ready for this!

    19. Creator Brad Dobberfuhl on August 27, 2012

      so awesome!

    21. Creator Michel Baumann on August 27, 2012

Awesome... now get working on the Comsumer Version ;-).

    22. Creator William C Crawford on August 27, 2012

Oh wow. So freaking excited about that. I was going to try it anyhow (F2P) but with full Oculus Rift support, I'll probably play and not care that I'm losing all the time. (Which is how it would go without the Rift, anyhow. lol)

Here's hoping more companies get on board!

    23. Creator Darien on August 27, 2012

I KNEW IT. I knew that Hawken would be a perfect fit when I saw it on EP.
