Hello good people!
I am on the cusp of finishing a studio album on my own Home Perm Records. The record is called A Million Stars (inspired largely by the watercolor painting above that my young niece made some years ago...). The songs are stories about crazy folks like me, who don’t necessarily conform to any mold. The title cut is about Cattle Annie and Little Britches who dressed as men, lived on the lam, and ran whiskey as outlaws in the late 1800’s.
The record producer is Chris Funk (from the Decemberists/Black Prairie), and it features many of the finest musicians in Portland OR. It also includes a fantastic cameo performance from my friend, troubadour extraordinaire, Todd Snider.
This is what Todd has said about me: “One of my favorite people to perform with and hang out with, Ashleigh Flynn’s lyrics are smart, she’s got a voice full of soul and she knows how to handle a crowd.”
My hope is to share A Million Stars with as many potential fans as possible! With your help, I will set these songs free with strong enough winds to carry them across many divides to as many ears as will listen.
The next phase of prepping A Million Stars for public consumption includes reproduction and promotion. In addition to playing as many live shows as possible to peddle my wares, I intend to invest in a bona- fide marketing effort. This will include optimized web and social media outreach, a Triple A and Americana radio promotion, and outreach to key print media.
While I didn’t have the resources to actually promote the release of my prior releases, beyond playing live shows, I have in all my gig travels these past few years made lots of connections among DJ’s, media and promoters. Here is what a few of them have had to report:
"Her latest release makes it clear that she’s got the natural soulfulness separating the contenders from the pretenders – Flynn’s American Dream is true blue Americana.” --PASTE Magazine
“Authentic, smart, fun, funny, engaging, memorable, and enough personalityfor three performers…If you want to impress your friends by turning them on to a new artist, say 'Ashleigh Flynn' then sit back and accept the accolades.” --Michael Young, Roots n' Boots DJ, WFPK Louisville 91.9 FM
“One of Jambase’s finds… Ashleigh Flynn, who hums with the same undeniable power and naked talent as young Joni Mitchell, Ani Difranco, and other(s) who have put their stamp on modern popular songwriting.” –Jambase
The budget for the record in brief includes the following:
$7500 – recording: producer, engineer, musicians, mixing, and mastering
$3000 – merchandise (2000 CD’s)
$500 – create a Home Perm Records DIGITAL Shop/website
$3000 – 3 month AAA/Americana Radio Promotion campaign by national expert!
$1000 – 3 month integrated social media campaign!
$15000 – TOTAL EXPENSES
$5000 – Ashleigh savings
$2000 – Live Recording show
$3000 – Benefactor donation (VISA)
$10000 – TOTAL REVENUE IN HAND
So all told, about $15000 to produce and release “A Million Stars” with some wings. The goal of this kickstarter campaign is $3000, as I figure I can muster the rest as I go.
Think of it: If 60 of you purchased my $50 VIP package, I’d be at my goal!
I am grateful for your time so far, and sure hope you find it in you (your heart and your pocket book!) to invest!
Risks and challenges
The most prominent risk/challenge in bringing A Million Stars to market is ensuring that the songs get exposure. Commercial radio isn't an option for an independent artist such as myself.
I plan to ensure that this happens by playing as many shows as possible (i have played over 100 dates each of the past three years while holding down a job), hiring a national radio promo firm with solid contacts among all reporting AAA/American stations, and by employing viral marketing strategies to get this music to as many possible new fans as possible.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
