About this project
BATBEAN: THE FIRST TRILOGY
First, thank you for taking the time to visit this project. It started in 2007 when my wife and I traveled in China and discovered a wonderfully delicious and nutritious vegetable called the winged bean. Its discovery dates back to the 1970s when many scientists believed that this supervegetable would provide a solution to the world's hunger and malnutrition crisis. She came up with the name Batbean to describe this supervegetable, and we played around with the story for the last several years.
We wanted to write a series of fun and cool stories to get children to like vegetables. We wanted to write stories about superhero vegetables. When you take the time to think about it, vegetables are quite phenomenal. They provide the food we eat and the air we breathe. And that is just the start of their benefits. About a year ago, we finally started putting the stories together and self-published the first two stories on Amazon Kindle, "The Origin of Batbean" and "Attack of General Sat Fat."
FUNDING THE PROJECT
A lot of family, friends, and friends of friends have told us that they love the stories and love the illustrations from their eBook version, but they really wish they could have a physical copy of these books in a large, hardcover version. This is where Kickstarter comes in.
The funds for this project will pay for the production costs, printing costs, kickstarter fees, taxes, shipping and handling costs (U.S. domestic), and minor incidentals. It will pay for the production of the third eBook, "Escape from Sugar Castle" and the hardcover book of "Batbean: The First Trilogy." "Batbean: The First Trilogy" will contain all three stories with a total page count of about one hundred and twenty-five (125) pages, including over sixty full page, color illustrations. The hardcover book will be in the large, standard size of 8.5" by 11".
If you are unsure about whether you like the Batbean stories, you can read the first edition of "The Origin of Batbean" for free on Batbean's website. Also, during the funding period, we will reduce the price of the second edition of "The Origin of Batbean" and "Attack of General Sat Fat" from $2.99 to $0.99 on Amazon Kindle. After the funding period, we will return the prices to $2.99.
Here is the simplified list of rewards that you will get for supporting this project by the various pledge amounts. A more detailed version appears on the side.
As we reach new stretch goals, we will give back the additional funds by giving out more stretch rewards. For example, if we exceed $10,000, everyone gets one free postcard. If we exceed $15,000, everyone gets two free postcards. We will announce additional stretch rewards throughout the funding period. For now, here are the first four stretch goals and rewards:
- $10,000 - Free 4"x6" postcard of the cover of "Batbean: The First Trilogy"
- $15,000 - Free 4"x6" postcard of the cover of "The Origin of Batbean"
- $20,000 - Free 4"x6" postcard of the cover of "Attack of General Sat Fat"
- $25,000 - Free 4"x6" postcard of the cover of "Escape from Sugar Castle"
Please add the following amount for shipping and handling for rewards sent outside the United States:
CANVAS TOTE BAG REWARD
We contracted with a local organization in Knoxville, TN, Borderland Tees, that helps former prisoners re-enter the workforce by providing them with short term employment in woodwork and screen printed apparel. They will be making the large printed tote bags for us. The tote bag is made with a high quality, 12 ounce (heavy), 100% cotton canvas, natural web handles, and square bottom. It is 19.5" x 15" x 5" with sides expanded. The tote bag is quite large and has the illustration of the Batbean superheroes as shown by our model Camille.
We will provide updates on the development of "Escape from Sugar Castle" and "Batbean: The First Trilogy" here, on Batbean's website and on Batbean's Facebook page. You can view the colored sketches of the first two books on Batbean's Facebook page.
Finally, thank you so much for taking the time to visit this project. We invite you to share this project with your friends and social networks. We will kick it forward.
