Emulsion! A new music festival that celebrates the adventurous spirit & the open mind! Its 6th edition comes to Shrewsbury in June 2018.
We are raising funds to commission two new pieces of music for the Emulsion Sinfonietta. The premieres will take place at Emulsion VI festival (June 15-16th 2018), at the Gateway Education & Arts Centre in Shrewsbury. The two composers we are hoping to commission are the highly respected pianists Nikki Iles and Robert Mitchell.
In addition to the commissioning costs, funds will go towards the preparation, rehearsal and performance of these new works. Any funds raised beyond £2000 will be gratefully received and will contribute to the more general overheads of the Emulsion VI festival.
Saxophonist and composer Trish Clowes founded Emulsion in 2012. In 2016 saxophonist Tom Harrison came aboard as Emulsion's artistic director. Activities so far have included 3 London-based festivals (Emulsion III was broadcast by BBC Radio 3), a professional development course for musicians, a residency at Cheltenham Music Festival (Emulsion IV) and a festival in Birmingham (Emulsion V, all broadcast on BBC Radio 3).
At the heart of our melting pot of musicians and ideas is the Emulsion Sinfonietta - a colourful line-up of trumpet, violin, clarinets, saxes, oboe/cor anglais, cello, bassoon, electric guitar, bass and drum kit. A happy by-product of several Emulsion festivals, to date it has premiered 15 new works. Two of these works have gone on to win BASCA British Composer Awards in the Contemporary Jazz Category (Joe Cutler's 'Karembeu's Guide to the Complete Defensive Midfielder' - 2016; Cevanne Horrocks-Hopayian's 'Muted Lines' - 2017).
More information can be found at Emulsion's website.
Risks and challenges
Emulsion is a small, artist-led operation which is currently a 2 person team of Trish Clowes (founder and curator) and Tom Harrison (artistic director). We have a growing list of highly supportive friends but running these types of projects can be stressful and sometimes you put hours of time and money into things that come to nothing...
However, with Emulsion VI, we have secured many different types of support from local musicians and organisations so that the risks for this project are minimal i.e. we know we can make it happen! :-)Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
