Trish Clowes founded Emulsion in 2012. Activities so far have included 3 London-based festivals (Emulsion III was broadcast by BBC Radio 3), a professional development course for musicians and a residency at Cheltenham Music Festival (Emulsion IV).
Emulsion V - at the mac birmingham - has gained some support from Arts Council England and the staff at the venue itself have been extremely supportive. We also have important partners in the Birmingham Conservatoire and Birmingham City University... so we know this event is definitely happening!!!
However, a key part of the Emulsion ethos is commissioning new works/collaborations for each edition (to date Emulsion has commissioned & premiered 11 new works) and at the moment we don't have the funds we need to commission new works for Emulsion V.
So, Kickstarter donations will enable new commissions/arrangements for Emulsion V from Hans Koller, Percy Pursglove & Cevanne Horrocks-Hopayian. All three composers are unique. Hans and Percy are highly integrated and important members of the Birmingham jazz scene. Cevanne is currently Composer in Residence with the London Symphony Orchestra.
If we surpass our initial £2K target we will be able to programme additional guest appearances from musicians such as saxophonists Iain Ballamy & Joe Wright and Cevanne (as a harpist) who will greatly add to the diversity of sounds and experience for the audience.
Risks and challenges
Emulsion is a small, artist-led operation which is currently a 2 person team of Trish Clowes (founder and curator) and Tom Harrison (artistic director). We have a growing list of highly supportive friends but running these types of projects can be stressful and sometimes you put hours of time and money into things that come to nothing...
However, with Emulsion V, we have now secured so many different types of support from local musicians and various organisations that the risks for this project lessen with time.
Our main concern now is ensuring that these 3 new commissions happen as it is essential to the evolution of what we do... and we sincerely hope we will raise enough to have our special guests present at the festival also.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
