Wayne England: colleague, artist, concept designer and friend

Many of you will already know of the passing of Wayne England yesterday. It came as a terrible shock to all of us and, even now as I write this, it’s still hard to imagine.

Since Wayne was a partner in this project, as well as the lead artist and concept designer, I think it appropriate to say a few words.

I have had the good fortune to work with Wayne over the last couple of decades, we was a genuine guy, who loved what he did. He didn’t suffer fools gladly and was never afflicted with an artist’s pretensions, he was down to earth, keen to see that his clients got what they wanted and above all professional. He was a dream to work with, with an easy, relaxed and engaging manner.

We both worked together on developing the look of Age of Tyrants over the past 5 years, he was instrumental, prolific and inspired. Deep down he was always a Junker, those B&W concepts he did are SO Wayne, he needed absolutely no direction, they were already in him.

And he was my friend.

No words can console the loss of a loved one and our thoughts are with Victoria and his family, all that I can say at this time is that he was admired, respected and loved by all of us.

I’ll leave you with one of the last emails I got from Wayne, just after our project was funded.

Very sad to hear this. The artwork he has completed for the gaming world over the last several decades is everywhere. His legacy is truly impressive, and an inspiration for many of us. He will most definitely be missed.

I've been fortunate to experience his art since my earliest war gaming days. He leaves a gap that I don't think can ever truly be filled.
