About this project
Z War One is the world's first episodic, comic book miniature board game. It blends classic survival horror & RPG themes with intense tactical combat, to provide a cinematic and truly unique gaming experience.
The Z War One Issue #1 box set contains the extended first issue of the comic, along with the base set of models & boards you need to start playing the game. Each subsequent comic book acts as an expansion pack, continuing the game's epic story, whilst introducing new miniatures, game mechanics & environments along the way.
Although there are several ways in which Z War One can be played, the real heart of the game lies in it's 1-4 player comic book campaign. The season 1 six issue campaign is made up of 26 nerve shredding chapters, with the thrilling climax of every chapter playing out on the game board. The cinematic mood created by the comic carries through seamlessly into gameplay, as time limits & set pieces drive the story forward at a breath taking pace.
The missions themselves, whilst working from the same set of core game mechanics, vary wildly in tone, from exploration and tense survival horror, to all out pitched battles, tower defense & daring escapes.
Director Mode is a quick-play (non campaign) game variation For 2-5 players, Director Mode allows one player, through the use of director cards, to stack the odds against the heroes, manipulating spawning, pacing & enemy behaviour to suit their own evil design. In director Mode "the worst thing that could possibly happen" usually does.
The co-operative campaign can also be played with the addition of a Director, although this ultra hard "Director's Cut" is only recommended for veteran players!
The Issue 1 box set contains everything you need to start playing Z War One:
- The Issue 1 full colour rule & extended comic book.
- 22 highly detailed hand sculpted 28mm metal (or plastic resin) miniatures (unpainted)
- 4 full colour 12x12 game boards
- 36 doors with stands
- 60 search / equipment / director cards
- 6 character & monster stat cards
- 55 full colour game counters
- 1 pad of character tracker sheets
- 4 eight sided dice
All miniatures are single piece castings.
Players take control of one of 4 main heroes, completing chapters and gaining vital experience points which can then be used to upgrade their character.
The game mechanics are simple to learn but difficult to master, with some chapters requiring multiple attempts and a lot of strategic planning to conquer. Below is a tutorial video showing the basic movement and combat mechanics.
We are launching this project with the Issue 1 box set detailed above, but in addition we are also launching the second issue expansion. Issue 2 introduces the mighty "Digger" mutation, a fearsome subterranean beast. Diggers are completely blind, but don't let that fool you, their other senses are greatly enhanced. A digger can sense vibrations anywhere on the board, so tread lightly, or be torn to shreds!
Fortunately, Issue 2 also marks the arrival of one VERY well prepared Yorkshireman and his dog. "Goose" and his faithful companion "Luger" bring a whole host of new tricks to the heroes' arsenal.
The Issue 2 set contains:
- The Z War One Issue 2 rule / comic book
- 5 highly detailed hand sculpted 28mm metal (or plastic resin) miniatures (unpainted)
- 1 full colour game board 12x6
- 5 doors with stands
- 15 search / equipment / director cards
- 2 character & monster stat cards
- 20 full colour game counters
This set contains 3 "Digger" models which are 4 part models and require assembly, "Goose" and "Luger" are single piece castings. If you do require the diggers to be sent assembled just let us know in the end survey.
"Tactical Espionage - with Zombies!" Agent Z is a limited edition mini companion game which ships with all "Z Day" and "Total War" pledges. Different in tone to the co-operative Z War game, Agent Z is a 2 player "versus" game which pits two secret agents against each other in a variety of different scenarios. Of course it's all set to the backdrop of a world overrun with zombies and other infected, but now those zombies can be used against your enemy. Throw a pheromone grenade and see your opponent swarmed, grab a passing corpse and use it as an undead human shield or, using a director card, take direct control of a digger and give the opposition something serious to worry about.
New Agent Z missions are to be released regularly online, using assets from all the future Z War One issues. The two Agent Z characters and miniatures may also be used in the quick-play "Director" games.

Stretch Goal £20k - One Shot So, in keeping with the comic book vibe our first stretch goal is a "One Shot". In comic book terms a one shot is a story told in a single issue. In Z War terms the one shot is a single digital chapter (and of course the accompanying mission). Because the story ark for season 1 is already in place (and balanced for perks/difficulty) we can't add more campaign missions through stretch goals. However, if the one shot chapter takes place BEFORE Issue 1 in the timeline, we have no issues!
- 1 Kick Starter Exclusive Miniature
- 1 Kick Starter Exclusive Character Card
- 1 Kick Starter Exclusive Digital Prequel Chapter
15 year old Amy was a loner before Z Day, nowadays she doesn't get much choice in the matter. When her last travelling companion was bitten and infected she did as any friend would, she cut off his fingers and put them in a zip-lock bag. The Kids got skills, we'll give her that, but is she just that little bit too weird to serve as a functional part of a team?
- Hunting Rifle (with an 8 round magazine)
- Knife (which can be used in melee or as a retrievable ballistic weapon)
- Bait Bag (some dude's fingers)
We are based in the UK and we are also manufacturing the product here. As such the shipping times are fast but, unfortunately, due to the heavy weight (3KG +) & size of the product we have been forced to charge some postage on international orders. We've tried our best to keep it as low as we can for you by absorbing some of the cost ourselves and the best rate we can get for our overseas supporters is £10 (Approx $15 USD) for backers in the EU, USA & Canada. Other locations are charged at £20.
Risks and challenges
This is our first Kickstarter campaign so we are new to this but we have done our homework, we have had brilliant advice from many helpful people in the industry and have tried our best to anticipate any problems down the line.
We are manufacturing much of the product ourselves here in the UK and the Manufacturers of the remaining components are poised and ready for action. The game is being manufactured entirely in the UK which is why the delivery times are short. We know how much it will cost, how long it will take to produce and how much delivery will cost in both time and money.
We have taken into account delays and problems in manufacturing and have given the time-scale as a worst case scenario so many customers should, with luck, get their goods ahead of schedule.
The final product will vary slightly from our prototypes shown above (some components like doors & counters are thicker in the final version and the board will be thinner than the 10mm thick one shown in the tutorial video) but rest assured that everything will be of our highest achievable standard.
All of our development work on Z War One is completed, we just need your help to get us into full production.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
