"Out of the Blue," by The Sitka Rose Band, is a lyrical musical collaboration between two friends, Jim Gilkeson and Jon Green. "Out of the Blue" began as a handful of bare-bones compositions, “musical canvases” for other musicians to “paint” on. The "canvases" and "paintbrushes" in the first batch of pieces were the chordal melodies of Jim Gilkeson and the versatile lead guitar of Jon Green. Eventually, five original compositions became sixteen full-grown pieces by both Jim and Jon and "Out of the Blue" was born!
Please Help Us Bring This Project to Life
This Kickstarter campaign is an invitation to you to become part of our project, a 16-track CD called "Out of the Blue." We are at the point where we need to raise money for post-production mixing, mastering and distribution of this music. It doesn't take a ton of money to do this and do it well, but it requires some, about $5000. We are looking for people, like you, who will join with us in caring about this project and helping us to launch it into the world.
A Little Sample
Want to hear a piece from our new CD "Out of the Blue"? Here is one called "Marina Singh's Bossa Nova." It is named after an Indian-born character in Anne Patchett's novel State of Wonder who finds herself, improbably, in Brazil. Enjoy!
Musical Sparks from the Land of the Valley Fire
Both Jon and Jim lived in Lake County in Northern California during the making of "Out of the Blue." In a season of many devastating wildfires, the Valley Fire of September, 2015 burned an area the size of the city of Chicago (76,000 acres) in Lake County. "Out of the Blue" is dedicated to friends and co-workers who were displaced by the Valley Fire.Movie Music?
It's easy to imagine this music in films or documentaries. More than once, listeners have commented on the cinematic quality of this collection. One of our aspirations for the pieces from this collection is for them to find their way into film, documentaries, instructional videos and YouTube.
The Deaths of Three Friends
The project’s title became literal and poignant when two friends, Nirakar and Tom Bradley, both avid amateur pilots, fell to their death in a small aircraft crash. One of the album’s pieces, “Air Theme,” is dedicated to these fliers. Another piece, "Amanecer" is dedicated to a friend of Jim's, Dawn Beye of Independence, MO, who also passed away during the making of this album.

Risks and challenges
"Out of the Blue" is still a work in progress, but we are in the home stretch of this project, carried along by the enthusiasm that comes with creative binges. Now, like Wile E. Coyote when he finally looks down after shooting off the edge of the cliff, we're finally at that scary birth moment as we set out to present this music to a broader audience.
The risks and challenges come in various forms, both practical and artistic: "Will there be the necessary money on hand to pay the inevitable expenses?" "Will this project matter to anyone besides us?" Strangely, we have to gratefully acknowledge Kickstarter for hope and assistance with both these questions. The money part is obvious: Kickstarter is providing a platform for this fund raiser by connecting us to you. The cool by-product of doing this fund-raising campaign is the formation of a little community of people with a wee stake in the project. Both these factors are comforting; we're not operating in a vacuum.
The other big challenge at this stage of the project is getting through the maze of indie recording issues, making sure we're dotting all the "i"s and crossing all the "t"s with production, mixing and mastering, publishing, distribution, royalties and the legalities involved. In this we have had all kinds of help. Steve O'Neill of Foxtail Sound in Dixon, CA and Jean Marc Brissat of Ampmix in Los Angeles have been our go-to people for post production sound engineering. The good folks at CD Baby have been a one-stop shopping site for getting the album out there as a physical CD, digital download and stream-able music. We feel we're in good hands.
Of course, the one risk that no one can insure against is whether this music will make it beyond our circle of friends and family. Even with that, we are comfortable in the knowledge that this project has been, from start to finish, a labor of love. THANK YOU!
