Why on earth should you back a word game when there’s already Scrabble, Words with Friends, Bananagrams, and Appleletters?
Let play-tester Kate, who has played just about every word game there is, tell you why:
"I love word games and this is one of the best. It has more choices for creativity & scoring than any word game I've played."
While the classic word game form is fun, FlipIt teaches that old dog new tricks to make this word game
- easier to play
- more challenging to play
In other words, more fun to play.
Here's a completed FlipIt game, all 100 tiles were played.
The innovations word-game lovers love start here:
This little twist is huge in terms of game play. A FlipIt hand is 5 tiles with 10 possible letters, so you're more likely to be able to play a word. That means less frustration for many players, kids in particular. For grandparents like me, FlipIt makes a terrific family gift. At the same time, there's a real challenge in making the most out of 10 possible letters.
Each tile has a "superscript" letter so you know what's on the other side without turning the tile over (thanks to my buddy Geoff for that idea). You can see all 10 of your letter possibilities at the same time.
Score more with letters on two sides
In one-sided word games, the letters below would limit you to "NEONS" for 7 points.
But with FlipIt you can flip letter tiles to make this word for 11 points.
Innovation #2: bonus points letters for double and triple scores
It's a red-letter day when you play a red letter because your word score doubles. The red S below turns 10 points into 20. When you play 2 red letters in a word, you triple the word score.
FlipIt's unique bonus letters add a strategic element to your play. You can wait to use a bonus letter until you can make a word with high-value letters, or use two for bigger scores. And you're not limited by the placement of bonus squares printed on the game board—score your bonus anywhere you can build a word. Scroll back up to see bonus letters used in a game.
Superscript letters alert you to a red letter on the flip side.
There are wild tiles, too—an asterisk (*) can be any letter you want.
In this age of "devices," FlipIt is a good old-fashioned family game that gets adults and kids together around the game table, thinking and laughing and talking. It used to be called "rubbing elbows." If that sounds good to you, join in the fun.
BTW, "funner" is a real word found in various dictionaries.
What the goal buys
Funding will produce 500 copies and pay the Kickstarter and processing fees, no profit. The retail price for FlipIt could range from $40 to $30 or less, depending on the quantity produced. Please remember that shipping charges will be added to your total when FlipIt is funded.
About that $25 pledge: if you would like to back FlipIt at a higher level but only want one copy of the game, you can still use the Manage your Pledge link to increase the amount pledged but only receive one game.
It takes an initial production run larger than 500 for a viable product that I can take to market. I'll have a good shot at making a go of FlipIt if we can reach the first of the two stretch goals below, and the second would be truly super. Your help is greatly appreciated.
Stretch goal 1: $11,850
Produces 1000 games! To celebrate, I will add a custom-designed FlipIt scorepad to every game.
Stretch goal 2: $27,850

Due to import laws and customs, I can't ship to Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Afghanistan.
Thanks for your time and consideration!
Risks and challenges
The challenge is to produce the game as envisioned. I'm confident that the graphics are professional, and I'm working with an established U.S. supplier. I think the game's play value makes it a worthy addition to the game shelf even when other word games are there.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
