About this project
It's simplicity at its best. A knife that rolls easily through your food, giving you precision cutting and incredible power, all in one motion. Perfect dicing, slicing, chopping and mincing each and every time! From cutting carrots - to slicing herbs - to mincing garlic, bolo will quickly become your new favorite companion in the kitchen!
WHY A ROLLING KNIFE?
Great knives do two things very well: feel good in your hand and cut extremely well. bolo takes this one step further, by making a knife that sits naturally in your hand, and channels the power from your hand and wrist to the blade to make cutting easier than ever before!!
HOW IT WORKS
Traditional knives all have one common deficiency; the force you apply on the handle diminishes as it goes from the handle, through to the blade, and then to the cutting surface.
bolo changes that. By placing the force of the hand directly ABOVE the blade, you have full control for precision cutting, while relieving your hand and wrist from unnatural movements.
bolo cuts your food on the FIRST roll of the blade, each and every time!
Holding down on bolo's brake transforms it into a chopper! Great for chopping the tops off of carrots, lettuce, celery and more!
As easy as bolo is for cutting, bolo plus is even easier for tenderizing!
Making meat prep a breeze!
Giving bolo as a Christmas gift
We won’t have inventory until March 2016 but you can still give a bolo for Christmas! Once we reach our goal, email us at firstname.lastname@example.org and we’ll send you a beautiful gift certificate that you can print out and give to a lucky someone on your Christmas list. We’ll ship your bolo to you as soon as it arrives.
The Pastry Blade brings fun and ease to your baking! Gliding through your dough, bolo makes it as easy as pie!
HOW WE GOT HERE
Years of engineering and design work went in to creating the perfect balance of design and performance.
WHO WE ARE
Inventing great houseware products is our thing!
For more than 20 years, we have designed and manufactured private label programs for major retailers, direct to consumer companies and TV home shopping companies.
Today, we're stepping out from behind the curtain to sell direct to our consumers, and introduce our latest invention - bolo.
Chef Randall Cornfield and his team include a host of talented designers, engineers and business executives who have made the successful journey from design to product - time and time again.
WHERE WE ARE
With our team’s expertise in design, engineering, tooling and manufacturing, we have completed the knife design, prototype, and various levels of testing and refinement. Tooling is complete and with our patent in place, we are ready to go!
WHAT WE NEED
We need your help to raise $30,000 for our first production run of bolo.
About shipping ratesFor our U.S. backers - 1 bolo for only $5USD, 2 bolos for $9USD and our 5 pack for a ridiculously low price of just $18USD ($3.60 each). Your bolo(s) will be delivered by USPS – First Class Mail Parcel and arrive in 3-4 business days.
For Rest of World backers, please choose from the countries listed in the Rewards. The rates listed are very economical, however delivery can take 4-6 weeks.
If your country is not listed, please email us. For those who wish to get their bolo(s) faster, select Rest of World as your ‘Shipping Country’ option. Your bolo(s) will arrive by AIR and delivered in 4-7 business days.
Risks and challenges
Time is usually the biggest risk in working with international manufacturing firms. Our project is no different.
We have our supply chain partners ready and able to help us manufacture bolo, but unforeseen bumps can happen along the way. The timeline we provided above is our most realistic estimate at the current moment.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
The bolo handle is dishwasher safe. It is best to hand rinse and pat dry the blade.
bolo will stay sharp longer than a regular knife because: 1) the blade is always rolling and not cutting on the same location all the time, 2) you need much less force to cut food so there is much less wear on the edge and 3) it is made of a high grade steel that has a hardness factor of Rc-59 on the Rockwell test, keeping the blade sharp longer.
You can take bolo to any professional knife sharpener, send to us or do it yourself. We will gladly sharpen your bolo for free. Please send just the blade to us (carefully and securely packaged) along with return postage and return packaging. If you want to sharpen it yourself, use caution, hold the blade with a glove and slowly place the blade in an electric sharpener, rotating slowly.
The blade is made of high grade steel, hardened to Rc-59 on the Rockwell test.
Yes! You can order 2 optional blades for bolo – the meat tenderizing blade, and once we meet our stretch goal there will be a pastry blade. If you ever need an extra blade for the bolo we will have those available on our web site www.meetbolo.com
We are considering many different colors for bolo! But for now, you can order your very own bolo in Kickstarter Green!
It sure does!
The handle is 160 mm wide x 105 mm high, the blade is 140 mm. round. The handle is made so you can easily hold it in your hand.
The handle weights 120 grams and the blade is 80 grams, less than a tradition knife and bolo feels really light in your hand because of its ergonomic construction and design.
This is a knife so this is something every parent will have to decide for themselves. I (Chef Randall) as a parent allow my 3 kids to use it. My son is 12 years old and can use it extremely well, and we always supervise our daughters (age 8-10). I don’t let them cut hard vegetables, but as many parent knows kids like to participate in cooking so as an example my 8 year old helped me cut up parsley. I took off the leaves for her and then I showed her how to do it without having her hand on the cutting board so there was no way she could cut herself – I would not of course let her cut a carrot, which needs to be held when cutting.
The extra blades will have a case.
The rear of the grip and the side walls are cushioned, the top front is not – designed for safety reasons, many samples were made and tested until we got to this exact design.
bolo was designed to be used on flat surfaces, such as a cutting board, where you would use a traditional knife.
Yes bolo can. Slice or cube steak, chicken or pork for fajitas and salads. It's a really great slicer of all cooked meats.
bolo will help you tackle most of your cutting needs and is complementary to other knives. For example when cutting broccoli, you can use bolo to cut the stems but it is more effective for slicing, dicing and mincing.
Cutting large, chunky foods like a carrot or turnip is easy with bolo and bolo can easily shave corn right off the cob. You can use bolo to ‘chop’ the cob but it’s better to use a chef knife. Take a look at this video on cutting carrots https://www.youtube.com/watch…
As long as the vegetable is the right height bolo will cut through it whole - you can make full slices or rings. Take a look at this video of a potato which is not higher than the height of bolo’s blade https://www.youtube.com/watch… if the potato was bigger you would cut it in half. Here is an example of a onion that was too large so it was cut in half https://www.youtube.com/watch… and it easily slices, cuts into small pieces, then you can mince or dice
We’ve designed in to the handle ‘Food Guards’ to restrict food from going inside. While some food will accumulate inside the handle, a simply rinse is usually all that is required.
The bolo handle was designed with safety in mind at three (3) critical points:
1. Two (2) inside tabs secure the bottom,
2. The folding handle cover, that locks the halves together on top, and
3. An elongated pin that connects the halves at the front.
The blade is not hard to clean; you hold it between your fingers with a pinch and just rinse it. When the blade has stuff stuck on it like cheese etc. use a sponge – we are going to post videos on cleaning on our web site as soon as the campaign is over – we are planning a lot of great demo videos so if there is anything anyone wants to see just message us and we will include them.
