Joy's World was started in 1987, a pioneer of community television fueled by the unstoppable energy and enthusiasm of its creator, Joy Hruby. Since then Joy has made over 1000 programs. The show presents people from all walks of life - particularly members of the community who seldom, if ever get to appear on television. Hundreds of technicians and presenters have gained valuable experience making shows for Joy's World, an initial step for many of whom are now working as professionals in the film industry.

From humble beginnings in the basement of a housing commission building in Redfern, the program has in fact remained humble...for nearly thirty years; currently being filmed from the converted garage to 'studio' at Joy's home in Botany, Sydney. Every week for all these years, Joy and her wonderful crew have managed to produce a half hour television program.

With only her pension and very little other financial support, the Joy's World technical department is in dire need of some help in acquiring some new cameras, a vision mixer and an external monitor. Your donation, however small, will be greatly appreciated as we strive to reach our goal of raising the $8400 needed to ensure that Joy's World can continue to provide both entertainment and opportunities for the people of Sydney.

REMEMBER, IF WE DO NOT REACH OUR GOAL OF $8400 WE GET NOTHING!                SO PLEASE SHARE AND SPREAD THE WORD TO HELP US GET THERE!

And thank YOU for your support.

For those who don't know Joy...

Actress, TV presenter, producer, film-maker, author, educator, a legend of the entertainment industry. After a career spanning more than 50 years, Joy Hruby is still on your TV three times a week, and has been for the past 20 years. Joy's World on TVS is the longest running show on Australian Community TV.

Joy's varied career has included teaching speech and drama in schools and colleges, playing organ in the Aboriginal Church at La Perouse, adjudicating eisteddfods and running the "Festival of Australian Poetry" for many years - collecting poetry from all over Australia from people of all ages.

Joy was a theatrical agent for over 30 years and and through Studio J has given a jump start to many aspiring young actors who have done extremely well in the world of entertainment. Her own career as an actress was not neglected. After completing her diploma at the Whitehall Academy of Dramatic Art, Joy toured Australia with J.C Williamson Theatres, she continued to appear in movies, stage plays and TV shows, ranging from "Caddie" to "All Saints". After her marriage to Czech professional pianist, Denny Hruby, Joy spent a lot of time working with Sydney Children's Theatre. Her daughter Anna is an actress who first appeared as Nell in Seven Little Australians, her son Frank has worked all his life in the film Industry, building a reputation as a focus puller and her daughter Janette is a former film location caterer.

Until recently, Joy ran a drama group for older people, with an average age of around seventy years old. They entered a short film into the Tropfest each year, and each year she was the oldest entrant in the competition. Joy was part of The Dubbo Dazzlers - a singing troupe comprising four girls who met teaching Sunday School! In 2003, she published their story in a book about her childhood days in rural New South Wales, The Dubbo Dazzlers - Memoirs of Four Young Girls During the Second World War.

Joy Hruby's contribution to the arts and entertainment was recognised with an OAM (Order of Australia Medal) in the 2007 Queen's New Years Honours List. "I can't believe it," Joy Hruby said of her award. "How can they reward someone for doing something she loves doing? I've had a fantastic life."

Currently, Joy's World is broadcast on TVS Channel 44 at 7pm Monday, 1.30pm Wednesday and 8.30am Friday. Sadly, after December 20 TVS will cease to broadcast free to air due to federal government funding cuts. However, Joy's World will continue to be produced and broadcast via a YouTube channel.

Risks and challenges

The challenge for producing Joy's World has always been the same: finding motivated people with a passion for their community and each other. And with the time and energy to contribute to ensure the continuity of production. So far, over the last thirty years or so, there has been a wonderful, ever changing group of film crew, editors, presenters and their guests all giving their time both enthusiastically and voluntarily. We are confident that this will continue into the future.
