The novel Grace Breaking Through was written to encourage those who have experienced difficulties in life which have left them feeling estranged from God. Some people who once shared a closeness with Jesus no longer have that, and they don't know what to do about it. Few of us know what to say to help people going through such struggles, and the simple advice of “just trust God,” isn't always as helpful as it is intended to be.
The main characters in the novel learn about and follow the themes of understanding and enjoying God's grace and love; combating legalism, bitterness, paganism, and shame; thriving in freedom, rest, and spiritual growth in Christ; walking with Jesus apart from fleshly methods; and praying and confessing sin. Other topics they explore include understanding free will, dealing with unforgiveness, eldering in a local body, and examining other church-practice concerns.
There is a particular need in society for the topics and themes addressed and explored in the novel. Many are hurting on different levels; others have nagging questions or have lost a sense of direction spiritually speaking. Grace Breaking Through does not necessarily answer all the questions; however, many readers will find the proffered guidance and encouragement to be helpful, refreshing, and even liberating in some ways.
This book is already written and ready to print. The funds raised will go toward self-publishing the book through Xulon Press. The expenses include everything, such as obtaining a copyright, an ISBN number, licensing for quotes used, and all other costs involved in printing the book. A portion of the funds will be used for shipping the books. This first printing will be very limited; these copies will be distributed to a few Christian leaders in pursuit of endorsements for a larger printing to allow the book to be made available to the general public. Therefore, this is truly a “kick-starter” project.
Every week or so, I will post a different excerpt from the novel under the “Updates” tab. These selected passages will provide some idea of what the book is about and how the story and themes are presented.
There is a facebook account for the novel (Search for “Grace Breaking Through.”) as well as a twitter account. (Search for posts at #GraceBreakingThrough.) These are provided as forums for readers, potential readers, and me to discuss some of the topics and themes presented in the book. They will also serve as useful mediums for presenting information and updates about the book both during and after the Kickstarter campaign.
This will be my first published novel. I have previously written two other novels and most of an inductive biblical study resource (this latter book in Spanish), but none of them were ever published. I've also written numerous short stories, poems, and Bible lessons—all of which were only used personally and never published. This book is different; it has a message concerning which I can not remain silent.
The story and content in Grace Breaking Through have been distilling and incubating in my heart and mind for a number of years. Over the past fifteen months, the Lord has made provisions for me to have the time and opportunities to forge these thoughts, conversations, and experiences into a book. I believe that now is the right time for it to be published. My prayer is that God will allow it to reach those who will be encouraged by it and that it will revitalize their walk with Jesus Christ.
"In Grace Breaking Through I love the presentation of salvation by grace vs works and the emphasis on the Love of our Father God. The conversational style and the characters, to whom I can relate, made it easier to read and comprehend than a typical teaching book, but also stays biblically grounded. I enjoyed reading it!" —Susan R.
“It is very readable and will probably be a big help to those who are under the 'yoke of bondage' in legalism. It will also help those who have despaired in their walk with the Lord.” —Sue B.
Risks and challenges
Grace Breaking Through is completed. I have spent over fifteen months writing, revising, and editing it to reach its final form. Therefore, the bulk of the work is finished. Xulon Press assures me that once they have the funds for printing the book, it will only take about a week. After I submit the documents, they will first send me a digital proof for me to examine and to approve before the actual printing begins. Examining the proof may take me a couple of weeks since I am doing this in my spare time.
Given this time frame, this first printing may be ready by late December or sometime in January. The only foreseeable challenge is for me to have the time to invest in examining the proof as soon as possible. The only foreseeable risk is meeting the campaign goal in the time allotted.
