About

The Issue

  • Nearly half (46.5%) of teens in the United States struggle with a mental illness at some point during adolescence (including anxiety disorders, mood disorders, ADHD, and eating disorders).
  • 1 in 5 American teens has a seriously debilitating mental disorder.
  • Only half of children with mental disorders in the U.S. receive treatment.
  • In 2007, suicide was the third leading cause of death for 15 to 24 year old Americans.

Everyday, in schools around the country and around the world, teenagers struggle with mental illness. Fearing the stigma surrounding these challenges, most teens suffer in silence. These illnesses do not only affect the weak; they do not only affect the outsiders; they do not only affect teens from homes with absentee parents. These obstacles can appear in anyone’s journey because we are all human.

Helping Through The Arts

Our Fellowship believes that more must be done to help those who are hurting. Theatre can provide young people with a community and a place to be heard.

We want to prove to as many young people as possible that their individual stories are important and that they are all part of a bigger narrative. Let’s help them find their voices and realize that they are not alone.

“How?” you ask. Our theatre troupe, Fellowship of the Ravens, is producing an original play that addresses teen mental illness through storytelling. We will premiere Where to Begin in New York City and New Jersey before taking the show to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August. As the play gains momentum, we can bring empowerment through storytelling to more audiences, spreading awareness and hope.

The Show - Where to Begin

The mission of Where to Begin is to represent the experiences, rather than the symptoms, of teenage mental illness by folding in elements of fantasy and storytelling. By bringing young peoples’ stories to the forefront, by treating these narratives with the respect they deserve, and by encouraging high schoolers to talk honestly about what they’re going through, the arts can create an environment of safety and acceptance, rather than fear and shame. The act of storytelling is more than a structural principle in this play—it’s a call to action!

What We’ll Do With The Money

Creating an entire world on stage is a costly endeavor. Money raised through this campaign will cover the cost of costumes, props, masks, puppets, cases to transport all of those items on tour, and publicity materials to get the word out and the audiences in.

Risks and challenges

No matter what, we will be doing a handful of performances this summer. The amount of money we raise will determine the quality of the production, though. The better the production, the more likely it will be seen be future audiences.

Hopefully, the tour this summer is just the beginning! Ideally, we’d love to bring Where to Begin to school audiences with a workshop of some kind. What could be better than telling teenage audiences that their voices and stories are valuable, then providing them with an opportunity to share their stories?
