You’re on your way to the diner. As you turn the corner your phone vibrates. Reaching into your pocket you notice that you have a new notification from Chicago Poets. Someone wrote a mystery that took place in the diner. You take your seat, just a few booths away from where the protagonist spoke with the shadowy villain. On the way to the lake your phone vibrates. Chicago Poets pulls up summer’s hit single posted by a local Chicago band. You let it play and keep on discovering new works of creativity.
These are the kind of moments created by Chicago Poets, a GPS enabled arts magazine. The humanities and arts take on a whole new dimension with the power of mobile and GPS technology. The world becomes your canvas, the map your page as you plot inspiration in the city of Chicago.
Every musician, poet, writer, artist, photographer, and filmmaker who uses Chicago Poets paints the city in the arts. Imagination flows into reality and stories spring to life for app users. The possibilities for artistic expression are endless and waiting to be challenged. What will you create?
Development is being completed by appoet. The development team includes Josh Fisher and Jeremy Applebaum.
About the Development Team
J.A. Fisher is the founder of appoet. After leaving a lecture of top publishers at Columbia College in Chicago Josh was inspired. They said they weren’t interested in creating literature applications; Josh decided that he was and began work. In less than a year he has produced an award winning poetry app entitled What We Mean and has grown appoet into an organization of five. Before starting appoet, Josh was a shepherd in Portugal, lecturer of literature in South Korea, and a teacher in Istanbul. Currently he is a graduate assistant at DePaul University serving as the Editor of Ex Libris.
Jeremy Applebaum is the developer, camera man, and technical savviness of appoet. He has extensive skill in various programming languages and works full time as a cameraman for his day job. He has a Bachelor of Arts in Digital Cinema from Depaul University. Jeremy brings a level of technical sophistication to appoet that is greatly appreciated. He reads and writes code like a virtuoso. Imagine writing a story that unfolds in front of the reader’s eyes. With Chicago Poets that’s possible. When you post a story readers will stumble upon it as they walk by. Your characters and their lives spill over into reality.
Publish chapters of your story around the city and send users on a journey to discover them. Compose narratives that take readers all around the city, and then share them using Chicago Poets.
Mystery novels with clues plotted around the city turn readers into detectives. Take readers to the scene of the first kiss in a romance novel. Plot the final page of your story and transform the impact of your conclusion. For the first time ever, influence what the reader sees when they look up from your story.
Add color to your poetry with Chicago Poets. Your palette of images comes to life right before your reader’s eyes. Users who stumble upon your point of inspiration will get immediate insight into your work.
Use locations to blend abstract imagery and metaphor into expansive poetic maps. Hoist stanzas to the ends of piers and to the top branches of trees. Plot them as dance steps in a field. Poetry engages the user in exciting new ways.
Tickle your imagination and submit a series of poems to Chicago Poets. Chapbooks take on a completely new life as they guide readers from poem to poem. Let the imagery of your poems flow out of a reader’s mobile device.
Whether you’re a single musician or a major band you can use Chicago Poets to post your music around the city. Take listeners along a magical journey. Let a whole new audience literally discover your music by turning a corner.
Gather a bunch of your fans at a single location to hear a new single or create a one time musical concert by posting a set list and then deleting it. With Chicago Poets your music can engage a new audience everyday.
Imagine leaving a love song for your partner to find as they walk home from work. Sing Happy Birthday and leave it for your children at the bus stop. With Chicago Poets your music will always hit its mark.
The world is your canvas. For centuries artists have had to take their canvases from their easels, their points of inspiration, and move them to galleries, museums, and private homes. Now, with Chicago Poets, your art can stay at its point of inception.
Chicago Poets allows artists to create digital graffiti. Your pieces stay on the map even as the version in reality is taken down. Create invisible installations only viewable to users of Chicago Poets.
Use Chicago Poets as a venue for activism by leaving pieces that draw attention to your cause. The influence of your piece increases with every passerby.
Photographers and Filmmakers
You’ve been capturing fleeting moments ever since you picked up a camera. Now, your moments last forever. Festivals party long after the curtains come down and the equipment disappears. National events are transcribed on location for posterity.
Create galleries that use locations to build strong, clear messages. Lend power and emotion to your shots by adding a new dimension. For the first time ever, influence what the viewer sees when they look up from your shot.
As a filmmaker you can leave trailers for your piece at the scenes where they’re shot. Move your green screen work closer to reality by placing it in its real world location.
Chicago Poets is in a unique position to collect data on the humanities in the city of Chicago. It will be possible to track themes and content across an entire city. Communities will begin to emote a creative pattern that may define them. Finding out which neighborhood is the most musical, artistic, and prolific will be thrilling.
Appoet will make this data available for scholarship and research. The work that is done with Chicago Poets can be recreated in your city. Watch the Kickstarter video to learn more.
Chicago Poets is a great tool for anthropologists, scholars interested in the digital humanities, and educators.
Risks and challenges
There are only three minor obstacles to completing this project. The first, and why we've created this Kickstarter, is to get enough content for Chicago Poets. If enough submissions don't come in, it may be miles before a user walks past a point. The funds for this Kickstarter will go directly to getting the word out and starting the submission process.
The second obstacle is in regards to our $1000 backers. Depending upon the number of $1000 backers, individual city app timelines may need to be extended. This could be due to volume of backers, design changes, logistical complications, and a baker's personal schedule. We'll approach this obstacle by working with backers to ensure the timely delivery of an application that meets appoet and backer specifications.
Lastly, the third obstacle. We're currently finishing development and have to workout the bugs. We'll be beginning the beta testing process at the end of September and hopefully it will wrap up quickly. It's possible though that it will not. Appoet is dedicated to providing its users with a working product. An extended beta testing period, within reason, is good for the project. It means the app will work flawlessly upon release.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
