What is Real Life?
Is this real life?
Lindsay Nyman and Kathryn Feeney wrote Real Life as a television sitcom pilot. We want to shoot it as a full-length pilot, but then release it online as a Webseries, broken into several different episodes. This allows us the opportunity to present it as "Episode one" of a TV series, but also to provide our online audience an easy and accessible way to watch it.
What's it about?
Twenty-two minutes. Give or take.
Real Life is about two roommates - Lindsay and Katie - living in LA and trying to figure out "real life."
Lindsay was a teen pop sensation - now she has lost her success and is trying to create a new life for herself out of the spotlight. Katie has always wanted to be an actor - after successfully completing her pre-law degree, she decides to move to Hollywood to live with her now washed-up best friend from childhood and give her dream a chance before settling into a sensible career.
Both girls deal with difficulties common to all young adults. In the midst of some crazy circumstances, they learn that their friendship is what will get them through "real life."
Who are we?
WE DON'T KNOW. AH!
We met on the National Tour of the Broadway show Ragtime as ten-year-olds playing the same part of "The Little Girl."
We are New York natives. Lindsay got her BA in theater from UCLA's School of Theater, Film and Television. Katie got a double degree in Political Science and Communication from Fordham College at Lincoln Center. We both study improv at Upright Citizen's Brigade. We're now living together in LA pursuing acting, writing and directing.
Also - that handsome gentleman in the video is our friend Karan Soni, star of the indie hit Safety Not Guaranteed and the new Amazon show Betas, who has graciously agreed to be in the show with us.
Why make this show?
To change the world. Plus, our IMDB credits suck.
But honestly, being a young actress in LA can be frustrating. We often find ourselves going on auditions for parts that are not exactly what we'd like to portray - girls that are slutty or dumb (or slutty and dumb) are generally the types of roles presented to us. There isn't a plethora of funny, smart female roles available to actors just starting out like we are. So, we decided to write the roles that we want to play! Girls who talk like us, think like us, act like us. Girls that other young women and men can relate to and laugh with.
Will I like it?
Just kidding. We like to think that if you enjoyed our Kickstarter video, you will love our show. We wrote Real Life in the style of our favorite TV shows - 30 Rock, New Girl and Family Guy were all big inspirations for us. We have lots of fun cut-to's, absurd situations and self-depricating comedy - because that's we love to watch!
Our dads made us do this.
So here's what we need the money for!
- Crew & Equiptment: $5000
- Locations: $1500
- Food: $2000
- Extras: $1500
- Editing: $500
Which brings us to a total of $10,500! This doesn't include our stretch goals, which would allow us to pay for hair, makeup and costumes (which as you can see from our video, we could REALLY use...) or paying the actors, director, etc.
Risks and challenges
This project is going to take a lot of dedication and hard work from everyone involved. We are basically asking our cast and crew to perform miracles for little to no money. But we have an amazing group of people involved in this show who believe in the project and are willing to do whatever it takes to get it made. Securing locations, working out schedules, and shooting everything in a limited amount of time are a few of the many challenges we will be facing. Not to mention the daunting task of editing everything in a timely fashion and finding avenues online where we can promote the show and attract a wide audience.
We know we are facing tons of challenges, but we are sure we will be able to overcome them with your help!!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
