M dot Strange's "I am Nightmare"
"When the dream of childhood is stolen... a nightmare is born" A dark animated fantasy film by indie filmmaker M dot Strange.
What is this movie about?
This film is about growing up in a crazy world that refuses to change even if it is destroying the lives of children over and over. The film is about how you can become your own hero and save your dreams from a world that is trying to crush them.
What will this film be like? A kids movie? Scary?
Imagine "The City of Lost Children" meets "Toy Story" inside of "Silent Hill"
Why are you making it?
Because I believe our world is totally nuts, it chews up and spits out kids hopes and dreams left and right just so it doesn't have to change itself. I think that is wrong- So I'm going to make this film that addresses those things whilst being suspenseful, creepy, touching, scary, and exciting as well!
So is this a documentary or something?!
Absolutely not! Its a fictional narrative animated feature film... I'm just sharing my motivations with you instead of dropping spoilers.
How long will the film be?
It will be between 80-90 minutes and be fully animated
When should we expect it to be finished?
It will be completed by Xmas of 2013
Why is your goal so low at $12,001.00?! Most cg SHORT FILMS on kickstarter have goals of around $50,000+ and this is 80+ minutes?!
Since I'm passionate about the film I'm going to make it anyway! By any means necessary! I work alone and live cheap...BUT the more money I'm able to generate the better and faster I can make the film! I would be SO excited to raise OVER 9000 dollars for this project so I can actually pay actors and the people that work on my films.
What are you going to use the money for?
- $3000 to hire professional voice actors (Up until now I've gotten my friends to do voices and/or have done them myself. This time I'd like to have all the voices be really high quality and professional)
- $3000 to pay the power bill for a year and let me render 24/7 which will allow me to make the film faster (rendering adds $250-$300/month thank you PG&E Smart Meter 0_o)
- $3000 to hire a composer to create the films soundtrack (I'd love to be able to hire the composer Endika who created the music for Heart String Marionette)
- $2000 to pay an assistant animator/production assistant (this will allow me to work faster and focus on animating instead of repetitive mundane tasks like file renaming/file organization/backup)
- $1000 for hard drives (I need to get a new SSD boot drive as mine BSOD's all the time and I need a couple 2tb-3tb drives for file storage)
- $1 to buy a new mousepad as mine is super grimy from making my last two films 0_o
Why aren't there DVD's or Blu-rays or Toys as rewards?
If I were to include those I'd have to set the funding goal much higher like in the $50,000 range and because I'm an unknown, obscure filmmaker with a tiny fan base I don't think I could raise that much.
I'm not sure I believe one guy is going to make a full length cg animated film by himself in one year?!
Check out my previous solo animated feature films- each one took about three years, but with an actual budget I'll be able to work much faster! So I've done it twice before on my own with no outside funding.
Meet the I AM NIGHTMARE team
Me (M dot Strange) + my current assistant Boo. If the funding goal is raised I'll actually get to hire a HUMAN assistant!
If the funding goal is reached my current human editor/one woman slave labor force Rakel would become my paid assistant, hopefully then she would stop putting laxatives in my coffee 0_0

What hardware/software will you use to make this film?
I'll be making the film using Cinema 4d 11.5, After Effects, Photoshop and Premiere Pro. My PC is a stock i7 920 with 16gb ram- 180gb SSD- Ati 4870. I have three render PC's with Q9300's and 8gb ram. So I'm not using the newest, best, or fastest hardware and I'm using an older version of the software to keep costs down.

Thank you for your consideration!
Risks and challenges
Rendering time is always an issue when making cg animation, some times renders fail or take hours per frame. I aim to keep a good pace wherein I animate during the day and render while I sleep but sometimes the renders can get behind adding time to a project. I do a lot of render tests to make sure I'm able to render shots on time.
There's always the risk of a major hardware failure, hard drive crash, mainboard problems that can set projects back. I have a redundant backup solution and I use a UPS to make sure a blackout won't corrupt my drives. Sometimes computers fail and do strange things which could also delay a project but I'm well versed in repairing both hardware and software problems. I backup all my important files so even a major hardware failure would only set me back a week at most.
With over 1000 shots to animate theres always a risk that I won't be able to keep up with the work but I was able to animated 1,700 shots in nine months for my last films so I'm confident I can stay on top of the quota for this film.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
