WHAT WE'RE DOING

Soap Box Derby racing has been an active part of the American culture since the 1900’s. Initially, the competitions were informal, both in the construct of the cars (they literally used boxes used to transport soap with wheels attached) and the races themselves. The Derby’s popularity evolved into more formalized events, fancier vehicles and more and more racers.

The International Soap Box Derby (ISBD) is the recognized governing body of Soap Box Derby racing. The non-profit organization includes the All-American Soap Box Derby youth racing program, the gravity racing challenge education program and operates the world famous Derby Downs in Akron, Ohio. The Derby dates back to 1934 and has grown to more than 600 racing districts throughout the world.

The All-American Soap Box Derby (AASBD) is held annually in Akron, Ohio every July. Participants become eligible to compete in the AASBD world Championship through winning their local race or by accumulation points in the rally program.

The Local Race is an annual race held in an ISBD licensed district. A participant is required to compete in the local race closest to their residence. The winner of the local race is called a “Local Champion” and is eligible to compete in the AASBD against other Local Champions.

WHAT IT MEANS

Racers in the New York City race will compete for 3 slots in the 2015 national championships in Akron, OH July 19-26th. The program will directly involve 60 children from throughout the city who join a team. The children will build the race cars, create and test racing strategies, train, and provide race day support. Families and communities will be involved as everyone rallies around “their” racer and their participation in this exciting event. Indirectly, the program will reach thousands of school age children in New York City through school and community organization outreach.

WHY YOU SHOULD GET INVOLVED

This is a unique, wholesome, high-profile opportunity to support New York City’s underprivileged children, their families and communities. It also offers a proven way to introduce children to real-world applications of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. There will be significant media coverage of all phases of the First Annual New York City Soap Box Derby. This will include broadcast, print and digital, on local, regional and national levels. The documentary 1000 Feet Project will show on the festival circuit in 2016. This will increase the program’s reach to millions of children and families across the United States.
