What's it all about?
We've been growing mushrooms on coffee for years now and are very excited about getting other people involved. Used coffee grounds are an enormous waste stream and they're also perfect for growing gourmet Oyster mushrooms!
We are an award winning certified not-for-profit Social Enterprise pioneering growing mushrooms on coffee waste. Our aim is to develop the idea and help spread it further by sharing our knowledge and growing an international online community. We're well on the way but have been told we need to move out.
What Inspires Us?
Right from the start we were inspired by the beauty of taking waste and turning it into delicous healthy food. But what really drives us is the potential this holds to be done in cities all over the world wherever there is an abundance of coffee waste.
Picture a future where cities all around the world have people turning this massive waste stream into delicious food. It sounds good doesn't it?!
How Do You Do It?
Check out this short 2 minute film below which shows how we collect the grounds in Exeter, UK and use them to grow Oyster mushrooms:
We've set up the UK's first Urban Mushroom Farm in Exeter. It's where we produce fresh Oyster mushrooms and our Grow Your Own Kits. It's also the main testing ground for our ideas.
It's not just us that think this is a great idea...the founder of the wide spread Transition Towns Movement Rob Hopkins opened the farm and had this to say about it:
"I felt I had a taste not just of one of the world's most delicious fungi, but also a taste of what rethinking waste management, urban job creation and food production could look like. It was a tasty vision indeed."
Tell Me More About This Online Course & Community
We have spent much of the last year developing an online course that can be accessed from all over the world.
The recent launch of the course in February 2015 saw people from 15 countries becoming members and we're excited about supporting them in their journey as mushroom growers.
The course is made up of 5 main modules and teaches the process of growing mushrooms on coffee grounds. It's combined with a forum to connect members and features regular Q&A webinar sessions.
It All Sounds Good So Far!
So What's This KickStarter Campaign All About?
So right at the time that we're getting to the point where our inspiration is turning into reality (after 4 years of hard work!) we've been told we need to move out of our current building at very short notice.

1) To make the move and re-build the farm with a better growing set-up to take it to the next level
2) We also need a new member of the team. This will enable us to free up our time to develop the online community and help it to grow
We'll spend the money on:
Fruiting and Incubation Growing Rooms £8,500
Water and Power Amendments £1,000
Additional Staff £6,500 (for initial 6 months)

Risks and challenges
We know how to run an Urban Mushroom Farm as we've done so for a while now already. Once this new farm is up an running the main risk would be that all our staff time goes into producing our grow-your-own kits and fresh mushrooms.
This could take our time away from building up a successful community of growers which would have much more impact in helping to involve more people and recycle more coffee into Oyster mushrooms.
This is why we'll take on a new member of staff to help ensure we have enough time to make it work.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
