“We Can Hula” is a 2-3 minute film, exploring the notion of escapism all through one man’s fantasy and his desire to have a slice of paradise. His paradise is a dense mass of tropical plants, lush and rich, complete with a beautiful young woman, hula hooping and sun lounging in his own piece of paradise. But this paradise is a façade, an artificial environment, all dreamt up in one man’s green house in a bleak, cold and desolate field.
The film is split into two parts; the first part is a submersion into the man’s fantasy, where the tone is dreamlike, surreal and highly stylised, moving gently through this man’s place of bliss. In the second part of the film, the viewer is an outsider looking in, observing the man and the reality of his obscure, slightly sad situation, namely of the man trying to recreate a paradise in his green house in the middle of a field. The colour pallet will be rich and strong, but once outside of the fantasy (outside of the greenhouse), the colour changes to show the contrast between the paradise and reality: paradise being vibrant and reality is the green house, an empty shell of reality, situated in a bleak, remote field.
The girl is to be classically and naturally beautiful, as well as sexy with amazing legs and hips, who can hula hoop like a dream. She will be wearing high-waisted bikini bottoms and a strapless bikini top, like a Hawaiian hula girl but with less Hawaiian and more sexy surreal girl.
The man contrasting to the girl: he is the average man in his 30s, slightly peculiar looking, his hair and skin of an equal pale tone. He will wear a woolly jumper and a coat, along with a thick woolly hat. Underneath his jumper we will see a shirt collar with an Hawaiian pattern. I hope for the viewer to relate to this character on some level, due to the essence of escapism and that there is truth in what he does, as we all fantasise about a paradise in a warm and idyllic environment.
This is where I need you!
With your contributions, I can take this concept and turn it into something amazing that shall be seen far and wide at film festivals, on computer screens in the home and any screen based format people can get their hands on! Most people working on this film are working for free, or for significantly less than their working rates.
The money we need will fund production costs such as:
Equipment rental (camera, lights, sound, ect.)
Set building and dressing
Styling and Art Direction
Food for the cast & crew
Any additional money raised will go towards film festival submissions and entering the film festival circuit.
SPREAD THE WORD!
We realise not everyone is in a position to help us financially, but if you are interested in our project please could you help us spread the word by sending a tweet with the link, Facebook, email, word of mouth to anyone you know that might be interested in assisting us in making this video.
If we don't get the full amount raised, we unfortunately lose any funding that we have achieved, so the more people that know about our project, and can help, the better!
If you have any questions, you can email mail@morganfaverty or tweet @morganfaverty #WeCanHula
We are immensely appreciative of any contribution made, and with you we can make this amazing! THANK YOU!
Risks and challenges
With any production project things are bound to go wrong, but if you plan to the highest level, everything should be as smooth as possible! The main organisational obstacle is making sure that all the crew arrive at the same time, as well as all the needed equipment, especially the portable toilet! In truth, the main obstacle and challenge has been getting the funding to get the project off the ground, as I know that all people involved are extremely dedicated and are willing to get the job done to its highest quality and as soon as we have the green light to go, its on!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
