It's time for a coworking space designed with freelance and remote working parents in mind, complete with onsite childcare.
Working from home isn’t all it’s cracked up to be, especially with kids around. And, as a freelancer, you don’t always need the full 40-50 hours a week a traditional daycare charges you for. So you recruit the grandparents, fork over the expense of a part time nanny, and try to get the rest of your work done at naptime and after bed. And we all know how well that goes.
The Hive is a coworking space with onsite childcare located in the heart of Columbus.
We're making use of the un-used space available inside St. Luke's Church on 5th Ave. in Grandview for our first home. With your help we’ll be able to open our doors as soon as possible to be that village you’ve been looking for.
It’s important for kids and parents to have their own separate spaces, and The Hive is designed to provide that all in the same building. Plus your kid gets to hang out with other kids of freelancers – we’re a unique bunch and we have to stick together.
The Little Beehive welcomes ages 3 months to 5 years at any time. Children older than 5 years are taken on a case-by-case basis.
Our staff will provide the loving and attentive care your kids need. With a 1:4 ratio for all children, the mixed age group will be well cared for and given an education-based play setting for their time at The Hive.
As a mother, one of the great things about working with your baby nearby is not having to sacrifice any part of the breastfeeding relationship. At The Hive, you can go to your child whenever he or she needs to nurse, instead of having to pump. Our napping room doubles as a quiet nursing location with a comfortable glider and storage for breast pads, blankets, or any other nursing needs. Our Little Beehive observes a daily quiet time from 1-3pm for all children and infants are napped according to their individual schedules.
Freelancers are the fastest-growing segment of the job market, with an estimated 40% of all US workers joining their ranks by 2020.* The Hive supports that community by providing the camaraderie and accountability that freelancers often lack when they work alone. Our specific focus is on parents, but all are welcome. Writers, photographers, architects, stylists, doulas, copy editors, chefs - you all matter. No matter what your area of interest, we understand that parenthood is at the core of what you do, always.
Our coworking space is true coworking – open but focused. Grab a chair, plug in, and get down to work growing your business. If you need someone to bounce an idea off of, look no further than across the table. In addition to the day-to-day, lunch and Learn workshops and other events (with childcare provided, of course) will help you grow your business even faster.
Need a transitional space as you head back to work after parental leave? The Hive can serve as that middle ground between being home with your newborn and back in your office full time with daily, full-day childcare offsite. Ease into work again and work remotely surrounded by supporting staff and parents who get what you're going through.
The Hive has flexible contracts – with everything from month-to month to year long commitments. You can choose from as few as 12 hours a month or up to 30 hours a week.
I’m a freelancer, a mother, and a connector of ideas, people, and communities. I’ve searched high and low for the village I’ve needed to raise my children and my business. The Hive will bring that village to our community here in Columbus, and eventually across the country.
This is a proven business model and coworking spaces with onsite childcare can be found popping up all over the country. This is our chance to bring one to Columbus now.
Freelancers and parents are out-of-the-box solutions-focused people. So we’re turning to Kickstarter to get The Hive off the ground. Your pledge will go toward furnishing the space with the resources we need, as well as initial operating expenses.
I’ve heard time and time again that this is what people are waiting for. So now’s your chance to show us you mean business. Secure your membership or simply support the project with a pledge today. Opening The Hive here in Columbus, Ohio is paving the path toward more support for parents and young children everywhere.
We've pulled together a fantastic collection of products created by future members of The Hive, as well as significant savings on your membership if you choose to back this Kickstarter campaign.
There are also rewards designed for you if you're interested in membership and you can always contribute if you simply want to support the project.
Like any community, this project has been made possible through the generous support of many people who believe in this mission of The Hive.
For both our logo and your endless hours of support (and coffee) thanks goes out to Allie and Adam at The Wonder Jam.
Thank you to Benjamin, Jennifer, and Josh at Derk's Works Photography for dozens of still photos, the video you can see above, and the endless hours of cutting, editing, and lighting to make it all happen.
Thank you to the people you see in the video: Josh, Simi, Courtney, and Dominique. And endless thanks to your families for giving you up for a few hours one evening so we could bring your stories to life.
And to my daughters, my husband, my dad, and my mom for inspiring this project, supporting me through the hard parts, and believing in me all along the way.

Risks and challenges
As with any physical space, having the space prepped and ready to go for a project opening day will be our toughest project once the Kickstarter is successful. We aim for an opening of August 28th and we'll have two weeks to pull that off once the Kickstarter closes. While this is a reasonable timeframe and since we're in a borrowed space and we don't require construction up front, we want to acknowledge that it will take hard work and hustle to open our doors officially on 8/28/17.
Just as it is in both parenting and running a business, we can’t predict everything, but we do promise to be open and transparent throughout the whole process.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
