About this project
FIRST OF ALL, KIDS LOVE FINDING FACES!
WHAT'S MY STORY?
A few years ago, I started to see faces. All around me. The first face I saw was one of the most common--the sad/shocked/terrified face of a North American electrical outlet.
I have to make the distinction because outlets look very different from one another throughout the world, and that means they have different faces too! Fun fact: the common electrical outlet in Denmark is really happy! Probably because it's Denmark.
For a while, the outlet face was the only face I saw. But then, I started noticing faces everywhere! I opened the cupboard and my grater smiled at me.
I locked my door and saw an owl.
While making dinner one evening I glanced down to see my pot glaring back at me with pleading eyes.
I walked by a small shop and noticed a wooden side table looking out to the street, calling for help!
I saw new faces, almost daily. I started to wonder if the stress of postsecondary education was getting the better of me. Was I losing my mind!? I didn't know why I suddenly saw faces everywhere, just that once I started I couldn't stop, and in addition to seeing them, I also felt compelled to take their pictures. If I was going crazy, it was a fun ride!
As time passed and I built up my collection of photographs, I began imagining what they might become. Was I going to just keep doing what I was doing for myself? Or was I going to share my quirky obsession with others? Once I made the decision to share, the choice to make a book just seemed obvious.
Fast forward to today. You're here, checking out my Kickstarter campaign for THAT FACES BOOK (hey, thanks!) which is now almost finished. I decided to launch this campaign for two main reasons. The first and most important reason, is that I want to reach out to a wide audience with something that I've worked hard on, and that I care about. I'm really glad Kickstarter came to Canada so that this campaign is possible. The second reason is that I want to see THAT FACES BOOK realized in physical, published form, and I don't have the financial means currently to accomplish that myself.
Your support, however large or small, will help me to realize this dream.
As a bonus, you can also score some cool swag, like these T-shirts!

Kid's Tees:
*these are mockup images only. Final shirts may differ slightly, but quality will not suffer*
I'm really proud of THAT FACES BOOK, and I hope you enjoy it!
By the way, money is not the only way to support this campaign. If you can't/don't want to contribute your dolla dolla bills y'all, you can support by helping to spread the word on facebook, twitter, Instagram, your blog, your myspace (you're still using myspace?!) at your school, your coffee shop, the grocery store, while walking down the street, or anywhere else for that matter!
As a final word of caution to the gents out there, if you find yourself looking down into the face of a knight while using a urinal, I wouldn't recommend LOLing (strictly hypothetical, not at ALL from personal experience... uhhhh... errrr...).
Thanks, and have an awesome day!
Risks and challenges
Believe it or not, making books about faces in strange places is not what I do for a living. That would be sweet, though! I'm actually a PhD student of architecture, working toward a career in academia. I love teaching, and I love design!
My architectural education prepared me for this campaign in a number of ways. First of all, studying architecture was intense! I know what it's like to go through a week without sleeping more than a few hours total. This means that when push comes to shove, I'm willing to do whatever is necessary in order to complete the task at hand. Secondly, I know what good design is, and I know how to design well. This means that I'll make sure that everything from the book itself, to each reward will be made to a high quality standard.
Also, while this is my first Kickstarter campaign, I've done a lot of research on how to run it successfully. I've rigorously gone through all of Kickstarter's rules, read countless articles, and have done my best upfront to anticipate the challenges and risks I might face along the way.
Here's the thing: if I've made a mistake in anticipating these things, I'll still do whatever I need to, to make sure you get what you were promised. It's really important to me to run this campaign in an honest way. And, as a creative person, I feel confident that I'll be able to creatively adapt to anything the campaign might throw my way as it develops.
