About this project
Pre-order your copy of the 400 page collected edition of The Dharma Punks - a story of love, friendship, punk rock - and blowing things up!
Help us reach the goals below to unlock extra AWESOMENESS:
It's Auckland, New Zealand, 1994. A group of anarchist punks have hatched a plan to sabotage the opening of a multinational-fast food restaurant by blowing it sky-high on opening day.
Chopstick has been given the unenviable task of setting the bomb in the restaurant the night before the launch, but when he is separated from his accomplice, the night takes the first of many unexpected turns.
As the story unfolds, it becomes clear there is more at stake than was first realised, and the outcome of the night's events will change all of their lives in ways they could never have imagined.
The Dharma Punks burst onto the New Zealand comic scene in 2001. Written and drawn by Ant Sang, the highly acclaimed series quickly became one of the bestselling local comic books of all time.
Over a decade later it has become nearly impossible to find a complete run of the eight issue series, and it has never been republished.
Now we have the opportunity to reprint The Dharma Punks, to collect this long sought after cult classic into one complete volume and make it available to new and old readers alike.
Ant Sang and The Dharma Punks
The Dharma Punks was created by Ant Sang – one of New Zealand’s most respected cartoonists. His design work on the animated TV series bro’Town introduced his distinctive and appealing style to the wider public. He followed this up with the publication of his graphic novel Shaolin Burning. The existential kung-fu epic was both a critical and commercial success, spending 10 weeks in the Top Ten NZ Bookcharts and was nominated for the prestigious New Zealand Post Childrens’ Book Awards – where it received the runner-up Honour Award in the Picture Book category.
Even before this, Ant was a well-known part of the NZ comics scene. His early mini-comic, Filth, built Ant a large and loyal following. He cemented this reputation with The Dharma Punks, a 400 page graphic novel published in eight parts. At the height of its popularity it was outselling Spider-man and X-Men on NZ comic racks. Long out of print, the individual issues have become highly sought after and there has been increased demand for them to be collected into a single volume.
Now with your help we can make Ant’s fugitive classic available again, in the quality format it deserves.
Earth's End Publishing
To get the ball rolling, we've formed a small publishing company called Earth's End, who's long-term goal is to bring New Zealand comics to the world - and our first project is The Dharma Punks.
The book will be 400 b/w pages, perfect bound with full-colour cover. We intend to print 1000 copies.
But printing and distribution isn't cheap, and to do this we need your help! Here's how we'll be spending the money:
This is a rare chance to pre-order your copy of the 400 page collected edition of The Dharma Punks. Plus order some of the other exclusive Kickstarter rewards while you can. These will only be available for a limited time!
Risks and challenges
Meeting print and production deadlines and artwork deadlines. Designing and organising manufacture of rewards. Logistics of collating, packing and shipping individual rewards...
Our combined experience should limit these risks considerably. Both Ant and Adrian (Author of 'From Earth's End: The Best of New Zealand Comics') have been published previously and Damon has used crowd funding to publish his comic anthology, Faction (all rewards and deadlines were successfully met). Additionally both Damon and Adrian bring experience in printing and graphic design to the enterprise.
We have formed a company specifically for this venture and have spent the past 6 months planning and refining this project.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
