My name is Rachel. I am an illustrator, concept artist, and storyboard artist who has worked in video games and film, and I am excited to share with you my first children's book, Sprout.
Sprout is a wordless comic book for kids that tells the story of Macy, a little girl who wants to be able to magically grow plants, but who doesn't have any innate magical ability. She is frustrated and ready to give up on her dream, until her grandma shows her that there might be another way to grow her garden. This story is all about working hard for your dreams and overcoming hardships you might face along the way, even when you don't see immediate results. I wrote this book to my childhood self, and I hope that its message will be encouraging for people of all ages who have struggled with self doubt.
I am self-publishing Sprout, and with this Kickstarter, I am looking for your help to get my book into schools and libraries. It can be challenging for self-published authors to sell books to these institutions, so instead, I'm asking for your help to cover the cost of donating some copies. I'll send these copies to the schools, libraries, or people of your choice, or will donate them to a local Michigan institution on your behalf if you don't have a preference. (See the 'Rewards' section below for details). Donating books is one of the best and easiest ways to support indie authors while also supporting your local reading community, and I hope you'll consider contributing to this endeavor for Sprout.
This will be a sturdy hardcover book, 8.5"x 8.5", about 56 pages long, and in full color.
Here's the quick rundown of how to rewards for the campaign will work. Basically, at any level of support, I'll send you a signed copy of Sprout. Then, from the 'Sharing is Caring' level up to 'Library Hero', you'll also be covering the cost of extra copies of the book that I will send to schools and libraries on your behalf. As thanks for this generosity, you'll also get a Kickstarter exclusive bookmark, postcard, or artwork, depending on the number of books you buy. If you would prefer to have all of your copies sent to you, or if you would like to send the books to your friends and family, that will also be available as an option. All of your choices and addresses will be collected via a survey that will be emailed to you after the Kickstarter ends, so be on the lookout for that!
I have several stretch goals in mind for the project, but the biggest one is a complete quality upgrade for the book at $7,000. Reaching this goal would allow me to switch from a POD service to an offset printing service, which would mean higher quality materials and printing, plus fun options like foil accents. This goal would also mean that the Kickstarter version of the book would officially be its own edition, with a unique ISBN, making it even more special for the people who support this project.
Thank you so much for checking out my Kickstarter! I'm excited to be sharing my debut kids' book with you, and I hope you'll consider supporting this campaign to help get Sprout into schools and libraries, so that many more people can enjoy it.

Risks and challenges
This book is already fully sketched out, and I am in the process of finalizing the artwork. I expect to be ready to order the books around Christmas, soon after the Kickstarter funds have gone through. I'll keep you posted with regular updates about the progress of finishing the book. The only potential risk for this project would be unexpected delays in printing or shipping, which I have allowed some extra time for in my estimated delivery dates.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
