About

THE STORY - The name of Anna Hedwig Büll (1887–1981), who was born in a family of Baltic Germans in Hapsal (now Haapsalu) and became a Christian missionary in Syria, is not widely known in her native country Estonia as well as beyond its borders. Nevertheless she gained an everlasting love far away from her home where a ruthless war is going on today and that is in Syria.

Anna Hedwig Büll
Anna Hedwig Büll

The life journey of this woman born in Haapsalu is more like heroic events of an adventure film. It was full of self-sacrifice, tragic experience and beauty.

One hundred years ago, from 1908 until 1953, Hedwig saved thousands of orphans and widows who were the victims of the Armenian genocide carried out in the Ottoman Empire. Hedwig Büll kept on rendering active assistance to Armenians throughout her life and almost till her death. Thanks to her hard efforts, thousands of Armenians – victims of the Genocide – escaped from imminent death. She assisted in opening schools for orphans, orphanages and hospitals as well as building houses and workshops in order to provide people with housing facilities and jobs.

Memories of heroic deeds and glory are always accompanied by stories about war and other crimes against humanity, but by observing the history of global catastrophes we always discover stories about such excellent people and nice ladies like Anna Hedwig Büll, Irena Sendler and many others.

The life of such straight and fearless heroic women follows a special orbit. Their understanding of how people should act and what should never be done, never be accepted is not depending on the risk level or popularity. They are doing what they consider proper to do and therein lies their exceptional strength and courage.

Behind all these shots are numerous meetings in Syria and Europe, hundreds of documents that have never been published before and long hours of interviews.

Risks and challenges

The Project has reached the stage, where all the ingredients are in place to start with the post-production: we are ready to continue with more than 20 hours of film material, complete the screenplay and large foto-archive and endless hours of preparation.

The only risk we could think of is the post-production process, which may cause a delay in the delivery of the final product for a few months. The team will put in all the effort they can, to meet the deadline.
