What Is Steader?
Steader is an online, video-based learning platform for homesteading and sustainable living, with courses taught by leading experts on a range of topics: soil and composting, backyard beekeeping, vegetable gardening, preserving the harvest, keeping chickens, and more.
This will be a cinematic experience shot by professional videographers and storytellers, and organized by the most popular and inspirational instructors.
Our goal is to eventually make Steader into a monthly subscription service, where members can access hundreds of hours of online courses...but it all starts with this Kickstarter and our first courses!
The Steader Experience
Here is the trailer for one of our courses on growing gourmet mushrooms. It shows some of the course content along with Tim & Jane's interview and homestead tour.
There are three main parts to the Steader experience.
1. Teaching Courses
We get together with experienced homesteaders, farmers, and similar folks - people who don't just talk, but do - and spend a few days with them on their farm or homestead.
They’ll conduct detailed courses on homesteading and other topics you are interested in and they are passionate about.
The courses (we call them "paths") will be broken up into smaller, digestible videos, just four to ten minutes or so per "step." The smaller time commitment for each step will guarantee that you’ll make progress each day in learning a new skill, in completing each path. The system will track where you are in the course, and you can pick back up where you left off.
We'll help you learn everything you need to know and give you step-by-step instructions for everything you need to do.
INSTRUCTORS AND COURSES
We have a growing line-up of instructors and workshops - homebrewing topics with Jereme Zimmerman (author of "Make Mead Like A Viking"), natural beekeeping with Michael Bush (author of "The Practical Beekeeper"), charcuterie with Meredith Leigh (author of "The Ethical Meat Handbook"), solar power with Don Adams (Earthineer), and many more!
Keep an eye on those pages, as we'll be adding many more courses and instructors in the coming weeks!
2. Homestead / Farm Tours
We’ll walk alongside the instructor on a tour of their home and land. We’ll discover the natural synergies of the farm, wild forage for food, and get a look at how they live and work.
The tours will be valuable, even for seasoned homesteaders, and will inspire ideas on how you can use the space that you have available.
3. Life Stories
We’ll sit down with the instructors for in-depth interviews to discuss their own motivations on why they have chosen this life path.
Meet John Moody, one of the co-founders of Steader, and one of our instructors.
We’ll release one course every month for six months, starting in October. We’ll start with courses that we’ve already shot this year and will start editing the footage into courses, but we’ll also continue to shoot new course video in Fall and Winter. We’ll continue to do this through 2018, in the Spring and Summer. Many of the courses will be seasonal, so we’ll schedule shooting for spring/summer dates that make sense.
- October - Growing Gourmet Mushrooms with Tim Hensley
- November - Making Fantastic Compost (vermicomposting) with John Moody
- December - Soil Stewardship with John Moody
- January - Make Mead Like a Viking with Jereme Zimmerman
The remaining schedule will be voted on by our backers, and we’ll fill in the timeline as we tally the votes! If we hit stretch goals, we'll add even more courses and instructors. When we deliver depends on which videos you choose with your reward level.
For each additional $2,000 we add beyond our $10,000 goal, we can send our videographers out to another instructor's homestead or farm, and add one more course to the list that everyone can vote on and choose from.
$15,000 Stretch Goal
If we hit $15,000, every backer above the $15 range will receive a 1 additional class that you have access to.
Spread the word about Steader, and tell some of your favorite companies about our Kickstarter. The fastest way to reach the stretch goal will be with the help of sponsors.
How Will The Funds Be Used?
Anything that we raise through Kickstarter will go primarily to video and editing, and sending a team across the country, capturing the knowledge and stories of those that are passionate about the way they live and are willing to share it. Any remaining funds will go into video streaming and platform costs, and the promotion of Steader.
It will take roughly 40 hours of shooting and editing to produce an hour of content. Our goal is to raise enough to film six more classes...but let's not stop there. If we raise enough, we’ll be able to do the videography full time, year round! Help us get there!
Meet The Team
John Moody is a farmer, homesteader, and leader in the local food movement. He started and has managed Whole Life Buying Club in the Louisville, KY area - one of the largest food co-operatives in the nation. He previously served as the Executive Director of the Farm to Consumer Legal Defense Fund, which defends farmers and consumers against government action to restrict their ability to grow and consume real food. He is a popular speaker at the Mother Earth News Fair and other events. The Moody family farms and homesteads on 35 acres in KY.
Dan Adams is an entrepreneur, speaker, and homesteader. He was the founder of Earthineer, a social network and sharing economy platform for homesteaders (which he grew to over 50,000 members). He has been a speaker at the Mother Earth News Fair on topics such as DIY solar panels and aquaponics. Dan lives with his family in KY, where they have had a large garden, raised chickens, St. Croix sheep, kept bees, and tapped trees for maple syrup.
TJ Friesen is the owner and chief storyteller of Community Media, a collective of creative people that love to tell stories. He enjoys visual storytelling that communicates truth in a way that causes change. TJ spends his time both behind the camera and computer screen, but overall loves to interact with people, drawing out their stories. TJ and his family enjoy gardening together and going out to the chicken coop daily to gather eggs.
Jeremy Smith is a web designer and developer living in Greenville, SC with his wife and three kids. He enjoys handling everything from writing to design to coding to server administration. Over the past 6 years, Jeremy has had a growing interest in homesteading (particularly urban and suburban environments) and permaculture. In 2014, Jeremy completed a Permaculture Design Course and attended Urban Farm School, a 7-month program offered by Ashevillage in Asheville, NC. During that time, Jeremy worked with an urban farmer, gardening, preparing new plots, caring for chickens, and helping with a small CSA.

To Make This Happen, We Need Your Help!
We’ve assembled a great team, we’re building our web platform, and have shot some of our first courses. We have a growing line-up of expert guides who are ready to bring more courses, but we need to fund our first year of video production. This will send a team to travel across the country to capture the knowledge and stories of those who are passionate about the way they live and are willing to share it.
As a backer, you’ll be among the first to view the courses as they come online and will have influence on which courses we will introduce next. You will also get some exclusive, backer-only interviews and other footage as a thank you, and some updates from John, Dan, Jeremy, and TJ as things move along to give you an inside glimpse as we build Steader.
Join us in creating a one-of-a-kind learning community.
Risks and challenges
If the project is successfully backed we don't expect any significant obstacles to fulfilling our commitment to backers. We have a committed team that has built online platforms and work professionally in videography and storytelling. Long term, should we be unable to build a subscription base (which is the goal) to maintain video streaming services online, we'll provide all of our backers access to the classes online for download.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
