One Week to Go!

We met our initial goal. Awesome! This magazine is happening. We can't wait to send out the first copies.

We'd love to reach more readers and to raise the funds through Kickstarter to both pay our contributors more and improve the quality of printing. If we can raise just a few hundred dollars more, we can improve the paper quality, which will make the magazine that much more enticing to hold—and caress, and cuddle—while you imbibe the revelatory fiction and satire within its covers.

Read more about our stretch goals below.

If you've already backed us, thank you so much. We're overwhelmed by receiving so much good will. But we're not so overwhelmed that we can't ask for more. Please consider sharing this project with other friends and associates.

If you haven't backed us yet, well, we're not judging you. Really. You're missing out on an opportunity to get an awesome reading experience and take pride in helping launch this new magazine. Hey, if you don't want that, we won't judge.

If you do want that joy and satisfaction, go ahead and back us right now.

Thank you, again, to all our friends, readers, and supporters.

-Christopher Wachlin and Jonathan Weisberg

Stretch Goals:

We've defined two stretch goals for this project, which we hope you can help us reach. First, if we can raise $8,000 with this campaign, we'll upgrade the paper stock of the magazine to a premium, recycled stock. Next, if we reach $12,000, we'll add a special treatment to the cover—either foil stamp or spot varnish—and we'll distribute 100 free copies of the magazine to libraries.

And, remember, from here on out, half of what we raise goes to contributors—writers, photographers, artists—and supports their creative efforts.

So, who are you?

We’re the internet’s leading source of Stoneslide.

Stoneslide, in case you’re not familiar with it, is a mixture of humor, deep feeling, and irreverent thought that makes you believe you’re laughing when you cry and crying while you laugh. We publish weekly on our website, The Stoneslide Corrective.

After 2+ years of virtual existence (which has been awesome, by the way), we’re working on a print edition.

Why bother with print in this day and age?

This isn't about a nostalgic yearning for the feeling of paper in our fingers. This is about creating a beautiful reading experience.

Working in the print magazine format allows us to pull into one place work that’s appeared on our site over the last two years as well as exciting new material, and then to stitch it all together and add the life-giving energy of design, curation, and serendipity. When you pick up this new magazine, you’ll be in for an experience that goes from riotous to contemplative and rocks throughout.

The trick is that printing costs a lot of money. Up front. No way around it. We don’t want to compromise on quality and end up compromising the work of our contributors in any way. That’s why we’re asking for your help to get us over that bar and make this issue all it can be.

What makes you different from all the other publications out there?

It’s all in our name if you know how to read it. The “stone” stands for direct contact with experience. This can be contact with rough reality or the silken touch of a dream, but it means our starting place is human feeling and thought, rather than any convention or genre. The “slide” refers to narrative movement, and the way that we think stories can help us understand our worlds and our lives in a fuller way. As for “corrective,” that’s a recognition that we’re sometimes inclined to be provocative and to ask how what we’re doing finally contributes to correcting a flawed world.

What does that theorizing amount to? Thoughtful fiction that’s also deeply moving. Highly imaginative satire that pokes at the walls shielding our eyes from injustices and cruelties. And the occasional spot of pure zaniness.

We’re also just a lot of fun. We have an amazing team of contributors—editors, writers, artists, designers—who share a tendency to laugh at ourselves while believing passionately in what we’re doing.

Here’s a page you can read to see if you like it:

What’ll you do for me?

First, we want to thank you before you even back this campaign. Does anyone else do that for you? We’ve become widely known for the Rejection Generator, a tool that allows writers to reject themselves without even submitting work. We’ve adapted that concept to create the Kickstarter Thank You Generator. Try it and get a customized email of thanks immediately—before you give. You know you deserve it.

Once you’ve taken care of that pre-emptive thanking, we think you’re really going to want the magazine. Ninety-six pages of beautiful photography and artwork, moving fiction, laugh-out-loud humor, and hide-in-the-pantry satire. What’s not to like? Back us, and you get one of the very first copies.

We also have t-shirts, and other rewards you can see over there in the right column. Want to give a little extra? We’ll be happy to add your name to a thank you section in the issue.

But more than anything, we hope you get a deep sense of satisfaction for contributing to this effort by so many people to create something of beauty and meaning. That’s always worthwhile.

What will you do with your Kickstarter riches?

Our singular objective is to make this issue great. If we reach our campaign goal of $6,000, we are going to print this issue on a high-quality four-color offset press.

Any funds we receive above that goal will be split 50/50, with half going to pay our contributors and half going to improve production quality or expand the magazine. We will consider upgrading paper quality, adding a spot color or varnish, and adding in some more of our favorite stories. The decision will be made based on how much money is available and what we think will most improve the quality of the issue.

Should we somehow raise so much that it can’t all be spent this way… Please wait while we dream for a moment. One more moment… Yes, we’ll get a jump on issue No. 2.

Who are these contributors you mentioned?

The editorial team consists of Tia Creighton, Jeffrey Stuker, Sam Holloway, Erica Gingerich, and Mark Boutin.

Authors and photographers whose work will be featured in The Stoneslide Corrective No. 1 are Mark Wisniewski, Douglas W. Milliken, Jude Polotan, Ellen Larson, Kiik A. K., Meg Furniss Weisberg, Joe Ponepinto, Will Mayer, Sati Melendez, Will Instenz, and Tracy Elin.

Design is being done by the talented and generous team at De Vicq Design: Fearn and Roberto De Vicq.

And then there are the two lead yahoos, to whom you should direct any complaints or angry missives: Christopher Wachlin and Jonathan Weisberg.

We still have more than two weeks to go in our campaign, and we have surpassed our original goal! Thank you to everyone who has backed us so far! We appreciate your help from the bottom of our hearts.

We’re incredibly excited, because everything we raise above that initial $6,000 goal will enable us to pay our contributors and to improve the magazine. Your support will make that possible.

If you’ve already pledged, thank you again! If you’re on the fence, come on over! The water is fine. Plus, you can get your own copy of a great magazine!

Again, thank you for all your support and encouragement. It means a lot to us.

Risks and challenges

We have already produced and collected all of the content for this issue. We are working with a great design team to lay it all out. The one substantial risk is that printing could be delayed. However, on our team, we have years of experience working on printing projects and overcoming the attendant challenges.
