Welcome To The 8-Bit World!
Piko Piko Detroit is a Netlabel and a collective of artists who love and embrace the 8-bit cultures: video games, chiptunes, pixel art, glitches, etc. We founded ourselves in late 2011 when we realized that there wasn't a lively community in the Midwest area for live shows and social community.
In one year, we have grown to a collective of over 30 local musicians and artists. And now we are reaching out to the Midwest region to expand our collective to explore new creative ideas for the future.
Our goal is to help the internet based community inspire and make a difference to real people and societies. Not just online.
Why IRL? Why Detroit?

We heard that excuse many times--bad timing, bad economy, bad politics, bad tastes, and bad people in general. But, the truth is, most of us are dismissing our skillful passions as 'just hobbies' or conveniently 'things to do online'. And we see this as a major issue especially in the Detroit, Michigan where society is begging for change.
We see it differently.
As much as we love and support the DIY and Internet culture, we still believe that some things have to be done In Real Life to develop ideas and move emotions, here, where our life matters most!
Flashback 2012

Our first year has been super memorable. We've performed at home parties, cafes, bars, anime-cons, and even science festivals. Our audience ranged widely from adorable 5 year old girls dancing to our piko-sounds to curious elders asking us rather complex questions even we couldn't answer. Now we have 10 year old performer that jams on his LSDJ. This gives us true smiles that will live long in our hearts, and we don't want to stop.
Here's a list of this year's highlights:
- 12 Consecutive Monthly Open-Mic at Lab Cafe - Ann Arbor, MI
- Chip Charged! Chiptune Show - Ann Arbor, MI
- 8-Ball Saloon at Blind Pig - Ann Arbor, MI
- University of Michigan - Ann Arbor, MI
- 1-Day Mini GameStop Tour - Ann Arbor, Taylor, Ypsilanti, MI
- Relay For Life of Chesterfield 2011 - Chesterfield, MI
- Penguicon 2012 - Dearborn, MI
- Invitation to Wreck-It Ralph Premiere - Birmingham, MI
- Detroit Luvs Robots - Detroit, MI
- Maker Faire Detroit 2012 (w/Editor's Award!) - Detroit, MI
- Youmacon 2012 - Detroit, MI
- Piko Invades Canada - Windsor, CA
And of course dozens of other shows that our local performers have been invited to throughout Michigan (Pontiac, Bay City, etc.), and neighboring states (Ohio, Virginia, Philadelphia, etc.).
Why Kickstarter?
We believe our story can inspire and impact the world around us.
Our community is driven by our passion, and our management members dedicate hours of their time to maintain a creative atmosphere and help support/promote our participating artists.
We do our best to keep our events free and open to the public. We select venues carefully to maintain a low budget while reaching out to as many people as we can. With the amazing support of our friends and families, it has been a very successful year! With the right mindset and a passion to evolve, even a hobby can change your life into something wonderful.
Today, we wanted to share these experiences with you.
So... We Need Your Help!
With a successful funding, the PPD Netlabel will become the initiator and foundation of creative projects in the Midwest region. We will help provide travel and hospitality for our guest performers at events, and we'll expand our tours to a variety of conventions and festivals around the nation, where we will continue to spread our stories.
To make these dreams come true, we are currently building a team behind the Netlabel to help organize and expand our productions to larger scale projects and shows. Depending on your contribution, 2013 will become a life changing moment for every one involved in the Piko Piko Detroit community.

- Piko Piko Detroit

Trivia: "Piko-Piko" is a Japanese term for "Bleep-Bleep" and we use it as a term for chiptune and 8-bit inspired material because it sounds cute and fun. Our art is not limited to any specific square wave or number of pixels. And we are open to the wide range of possibilities the culture provides. We love Piko Piko!
Risks and challenges
The challenge is to initiate an opportunity for local artists to come together and collaborate with a creative mindset that includes goals and deadlines. This process will help improve our overall ethics of making things happen in real life. We may be a collective of passionate enthusiasts, but that does not mean we can't produce amazing art.
The risks are that since we are a new organisation, each step will be a challenge to bring new ideas into a fresh community. Reward Items will be designed by several local artists, so overall production will depend on their response time. We appreciate your patience and cooperation!
For the mini tour reward, we will do our best to schedule around the backer's request, however we cannot guarantee participating artists. The show is to be scheduled during 2013. Event details are negotiable. We have the right to cancel any event if we feel there is threat of harm or danger to any of our participating artists.
