Read the Buzz!
We've been covered by some news sites such as UploadVR! Check out what people have said about us!
Remember Nintendogs and Tamagotchi growing up? Many of us have fond memories playing pet games at some point. It's now 2017, and VR has opened the door to the next generation of virtual companions!
RoVR is the first lovingly made VR dog simulator! In RoVR, you can play with, raise, and build a heartwarming connection with your own VR dog! RoVR is for everyone who always wanted a dog, but couldn't have one. This was us growing up, but our parents never let us have one. Even though we could get one now as adults, it's still a lot of work to provide a real dog with a good life!
So, we decided to build a VR dog not only for ourselves, but so that people who always wanted a dog, could!
In RoVR, you can do lots of fun things with your VR dog! From petting to feeding to going for walks, your VR dog will always be happy to spend time with you!
Who's a good boy?
Like any real doggo, your VR dog also loves pets. Whether it's head pats, tummy rubs, or picking up and snuggling, get ready get lots of love from a very good dog!
Not just a cute face...
Dogs in RoVR aren't just cute - they're extremely smart and perceptive too! We're leveraging powerful machine learning algorithms to create a dog AI that learns how to behave depending on how you act towards it. You'll be able to raise your very own VR dog just like a real dog! The more treats, pets, and love you show your VR dog, the more it will love you each day.
Make sure to feed and bathe your dog too or he might just get mad at you and even refuse to play!
RoVR combines incredibly immersive VR technology with an extremely sophisticated AI to create an interactive experience like you've never felt before. For example, you can teach your dog to do tricks in response to custom hand gestures and phrases.
Like any real dog, you'll have to house train your puppy at first. Be warned, it will take a lot of treats and patience...
Train your dog to compete in agility competitions to test your dog's obedience and athleticism.
Feel your heart swell as your VR dog showers you with love for being such a kind owner.
We’re building a world for you and your dog to explore (and smell)! Go on serene nature walks by the lake. Visit the local dog shoppe to buy goodies for your buddy. Chat with the various dog owning NPCs in town. There's so many holes to dig and things to sniff!
Your dog loves to play and have fun! Play fetch in the park! Go swimming in a lake! Throw your dog a birthday party and invite all of its friends! There are so many fun things to do with your VR dog.
What fun would it be if you couldn't dress your VR doggo up in ridiculously cute costumes and take pictures of them? In RoVR, there are so many different kinds of costumes and accessories to collect and unlock!
Camera: Want to show off your doggo wearing a cute costume you just bought for it? We gotchu. We're building an in-game camera so that you can share photos and videos of your VR doggo with your friends and family!
We are building RoVR to support both the HTC Vive and Oculus platforms. We plan on releasing the beta of RoVR Winter 2017 for both Oculus and Vive. We then plan on releasing RoVR on Steam early access and Oculus Home March 2018.
Although RoVR already has a lot of awesome features and gameplay, we believe that RoVR has the potential to become an even bigger and better game! Consequently, we've planned even more exciting features if we hit our stretch goals that will make the RoVR experience even more special.
3 more dogs!
If our Kickstarter hits 50,000 dollars, we'll add 3 more breeds of dogs into RoVR! Breeds will be selected by backer vote exclusively!
Activity Pack Expansion
We'll add even more ridiculously fun and awesome activities to do with your dog, such as surfing and musical canine freestyle (If you don't know what that is, search videos of it - it's actually amazing)
Multiplayer is not a part of the base game promised, but we think that it would add incredible depth to RoVR! If we hit this stretch goal, we plan on creating a world where you and your friends can meet up with your dogs and do different activities with each other. Go for a hike in the woods. Compete against each other in the agility arena. Have puppies together... The possibilities are endless and will add immense amounts of fun!
AR Companion App
Take your dog with you on the go with your smartphone! If we hit this stretch goal, we will release an iOS companion app for RoVR that will leverage Apple's new ARKit technology to show your dog in AR! We'll also build this app so you don't have to have a VR headset to play RoVR, and you can still raise an AR dog from you phone!
Mega World Expansion
We want to create a massive world with different kinds of places to see, activities to do, and NPCs/quests to complete with your dog. From the fishing by the ocean to climbing tropical volcanoes, we will create an enormous and varied world for you to explore with your virtual best friend!
5 more dogs + Cats!
RoVR is currently about dogs, but our ultimate goal is to be able to create a world where you can own all kinds of virtual pets! If we hit this stretch goal, we'll make a step towards that by including a couple breeds of cats into the game. Like our dogs, we plan on creating cats that are also extremely smart and perceptive and will act in ways that you'd expect a real cat to act. We can't wait to see what kinds of funny cat videos people will make!
Ultimately, development of RoVR depends on our Kickstarter campaign achieving its goal. Due to our limited resources, RoVR cannot be completed if this goal is not met.
We plan to expand our team to have more programmers to speed up development. As cofounders, we're paying ourselves just enough to cover our living expenses. The vast majority of costs will go towards RoVR.
RoVR is truly our passion project and we've all made incredible personal and financial sacrifices to get to where we are today. We love RoVR, and we hope that you will too!
RoVR was born out of me and Jeremy's senior design project in college. Since then, our little virtual pupper has come so far, and we are more motivated than ever to fulfill our dream of letting everyone own their own VR pet! However, we have gotten as far as we possibly could with the funding and resources that we had.
The current state of indie VR development is really tough - given the relatively small size of the VR headset market, it is really difficult for independent VR developers to create games themselves. This is compounded by the fact that many game publishers are wary of funding VR titles for the same reason. Consequently, there are very few high quality VR experiences out there.
We want to help fix that by producing something that won't just feel like another tech demo, but a fully built out experience that offers deep engaging gameplay and interaction. We are fully invested and believe in the future of VR, and we believe that building extremely polished, well designed VR experiences is the only way to ensure that VR has a promising future!
Jeremy and I met our junior year old college in graphics class. After working on some pair projects together, we realized we both were passionate about VR. Consequently, we decided to work on a VR project for our senior design project. Hence, RoVR was born!
As we continued to work on RoVR, it kept on growing into a bigger and bigger game! We won an entrepreneurship competition with RoVR, and we were eventually accepted into the Play Labs Accelerator at MIT! After receiving some funding, we had Luana and Rohan join our team to help us create the perfect virtual dog.
We are a passionate team of programmers, artists, animators, and most importantly, dog lovers. All of us care deeply about this project and we are working towards a future where everyone have the dog ownership experience through VR! :)
Help spread the word about RoVR!
Risks and challenges
VR indie game development comes with a myriad of challenges. From programming to creating art to marketing to business development, there are a lot of moving parts! From a programming perspective, features take time to design, implement, and test. However, we have scoped the features we expect the MVP to have and have set our goals accordingly to ensure we deliver before running out of funding. Combined with our multiple years of game development experience, we are prepared to tackle any engineering challenge that we will face.
The same can be said for art as well. Modeling and animating dogs and accessories is a complex process that requires a lot of time, effort, and communication. However, our deep understanding of the game and experience with creating dog models will ensure we produce the highest quality puppers.
Although dependencies exist between art, programming, and marketing, our strong communication skills allow us to best optimize parallelizing tasks blocks are minimized.
With creation of physical goods, there is always the risk of things going awry such as needing time to find the right manufacturer or shipping complications. However, we promise to make prudent choices that will result in high quality goodies that you will be happy with.
Although our team is officially 4 members, we have a huge network of connections and mentors with experience in tons of areas relevant to running a game studio. Our mentors have helped us get this far, and they will continue supporting us to make sure we deliver upon our promises to you all.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
