About this project
I'm Tom Storm. The World in a Bubble Project is my passion to use bubble photography to exceed the current pop culture understanding of the world by realization through personal interaction.
Travel the globe capturing recognizable icons within the reflection of an unorthodox and playful perspective: a floating bubble.
I really want to share the wonders of world with other human beings of our planet through my bubble images.
After stumbling upon a floating soap bubble in Ireland in 2006, “The World in a Bubble” project was born.
What started out as a personal challenge quickly turned into a personal mission.
Through the bubble photographs, workshops, and lectures, WIB has already allowed me share the world and its cultures with others.
With the help of friends and strangers, I've been able to capture well-known places such as: The Brandenburg gate in Berlin Germany, The Blue Mosque in Istanbul, The Cloud Gate in Chicago Illinois, and Times Square in New York City.
People watch and stare as I follow (or chase) floating bubbles with my camera pressed to my eye. Crowds form, and my bubble blowing partners (friends or willing strangers) do their part to help make sure I don't wander into traffic.
Barometric pressure, humidity, temperature, and light are just some of the obstacles that make this photographic process so unique and somewhat difficult. Yet it’s so worthwhile to finally capture the right moment. Some locations have been a bit more elusive to grasp too, such as the Leaning tower of Pisa in Italy. It rained all day when I visited. While there were no leaning bubbles, I saw beauty everywhere.
World In A Bubble takes time, patience, teamwork, and a light-hearted approach.
It's that easy.
It's that hard.
The World in a Bubble Project is an interactive art mission that allows you to not only SEE the process, but to be become a VITAL PART of it. With your help, I can continue sharing the idea of fresh global perspective to everyone I can.
It's time to lay the foundation for something much bigger than the photography itself.
Kickstarter is the perfect avenue to take the World in a Bubble Project to these places. With your help in creating this upcoming portfolio, future bubbles can become a doorway to communities around the globe.
Up to this point, World In A Bubble has been self-funded. With your kind pledge this body of work will take a life of its own.
THE PLAN: to circle the Northern Hemisphere of the globe, in June/July and the Southern Hemisphere in Nov/Dec. This schedule will avoid winter in the countries I'm visiting and provide the best bubble blowing conditions. For the long hauls I'll be using Eurail Global Pass for Europe and 2 Round the World Fare plane tickets.
The journey will begin when I fly to Dublin looking to get the Spire, the Guinness Brewery, and the murals in Derry. Locations can and will be added upon request and availability. Big things work best.
Taj-Maha in Indial = good picture Little Mermaid statue in Denmark = very tiny not good picture
Next stop, Great Britain and Scotland. Stonehenge, Big Ben, something amazing I have yet to discover in Scotland perhaps (maybe Loch Ness).
I'll zig-zag across Europe per your suggestions (and weather conditions). When the dates draw near, I'll be posting definite locations so you can meet me in the field when I'm in your area.
From Europe I'll move to northern Asia, Russia, China, S. Korea, Japan then make my journey home.
Part of the project is very much like fishing. Some days you bring home a great catch, other days, well, the net could be empty. Never fear! With my camera in hand, I'll be shooting non-stop ensuring all sorts of amazing shots even if the weather isn't cooperating with the bubbles. Either way, we'll have an adventure.
Making bubbles in the Southern Hemisphere, I plan to shoot in: South America; Brazil and Chile (Easter Island), South Africa, Dubai, India- Taj Mahal, Jordan, Nepal, Thailand, Australia and New Zealand.
Where do you think I should go?

You can determine my destinations. Or, better yet, meet me there!
Alas, I'm only one person with limited time. It's a hard fact that I won't be able to hit every country this time around but I'll be taking care of the most well known and some of the lesser-known places. Though I've identified many major and obvious landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower in France and Pisa in Italy, much of the trip waits for your ideas. I'll be updating the locations here on kickstarter and tomstorm.net as I get feedback and suggestions from you.
This is a community-oriented project, a social experiment and a show! You can be a part of art in action by contributing your destinations, your bubble blowing skills, or a floor to lay my head.
As I continue to organize the WIB journey and firm up dates, I'll post progress.
Expect a lot of video updates along the way. Check them out at tomstorm.net.
MY GOAL: $33,000
$14,000 Phase 1 & Phase 2 Round the World Plane Fares
$1,000 Eurail 30 day Global Pass
$5,000 for other transportation (costs yet unseen like local trains, puddle jumpers, entrance fees, Visas, "reciprocity fees", departure taxes, etc...)
Eats and Sheets
I'm estimating a combined budget of $1,500 per phase, a safe bet with all the uncertainties of almost daily country shifting.
Total Phase 1 & Phase 2: $3,000
I'd like to invest in a Macbook Pro to help communicate back to you all at home as the trip progresses. Movies and videos en route! Refurbished Macbook Pro: $2,000
Cost of Being Away for 3-4 months in pesky bills and loss of income.
Buffering the void and the vacuum: $5,000
Beyond the goal
Any funding over and above my goal will go directly into advancing this project through further WIB excursions, gallery shows, workshops, and trips.
I'LL BE WRITING HOME, PROMISE
Please expect updates along the way, both video and blog at tomstorm.net.
So what do you say? I'm looking forward to taking this journey with you, the world and the bubbles.
