About this project
When you give this bear to a young person, you give a challenge – both from yourself, and from the Veterans who crafted them. This is more than a teddy bear, it’s a companion on your journey to make the world a better place. This durable, belt or pack mountable bear is there to inspire you the whole way, and to join you in your celebratory photographs of your accomplishments. These photos are the key to continuing the challenge, when you upload them to our Facebook page or the social media page of your choosing as you challenge your friends! https://www.facebook.com/ChallengeBears
Wear the bear during a beach or park clean up, while serving food at a homeless shelter, while exploring at a museum, participating in a fund raising walk, while experiencing civics at a City Hall meeting or traveling to a new community and building relationships with people from another culture. What can you do to make the world a better place? Take a picture or a video and show your pride by posting it to Facebook or Instagram. The remarkable Challenge Bear has a hidden pocket to hold souvenirs of your path in achieving the goal, as well as the Veterans challenge card as a reminder.
We are a group of Veterans who have seen a life of service, and we want to create something that will challenge people to serve our communities and to make the world a better place. GreenVetsLA is a non-profit program set up by a disabled former Army officer to provide work therapy on projects for once-homeless and at-risk Veterans. These projects are more than work, they inspire these Veterans to feel like they are once again serving their community, and give them the sense of pride and self-respect to empower them to rejoin the society they once served.
Army veteran Steve S. led the way! He strapped his challenge bear to his motorcycle and rode from Key West, Florida to Point Barrow, Alaska to benefit six different charities. We watched Steve’s Facebook postings of Challenge Bear pictures illustrating his trek across North America.
Another Challenge Bear toured South America and was gifted to a French boy who's family is circumnavigating the world and experiencing its vast cultures.
The Christmas Holiday Season is our delivery target. With our Kickstarter campaign running through October, we expect to manufacture over a five week period throughout November and into early December. We will ship the bears in mid-December to have them delivered to our customers in time to wrap them up for the Holiday Season.
GROUP OR BUSINESS INSPIRATION PURCHASES
What better motivating holiday gift for your group or staff? Have us embroider your group’s logo onto a set of our bears to give as a challenge to your team, or for them to challenge their families. We can embroider just your logo, or your logo with the words “Challenge for a Better World” around your logo. Both options still come with a hang tag printed with the challenge from our Veterans to the recipient. Our Veterans would get a boost from seeing a Challenge Bear competition on your company’s Facebook page, and we think your customers would get a boost too. (Different Color Options Available)
The project that led to the Challenge Bear was the Battle Bear. This was a similar bear that our Veterans designed and made using camouflage cloths that matched the uniforms of deployed service members. These heroes could then take a picture of the bear in their matching fatigues, attach their unit patch to the bear’s belly, and send it home with a picture of the parent with the bear. For the child, this creates a visual bond through the bear to the deployed parent.
Risks and challenges
RISKS AND CHALLENGES
What’s great is that we are staffed with Veterans! They plan for the best and prepare for the worst!
For two years we’ve been producing teddy bears called “Battle Bears” for deployed service members to give to their families to help them continue their bonds while away from home. As the Challenge Bears are of similar shape, material, and production steps to the Battle Bears, we are confident that we will be able to produce them on time and with very few problems.
WHAT HAPPENS IF THIS KICKSTARTER GOES TOO WELL?
Let’s start with the awesome problems! Our program works with a local sewing factory that has generously supported us with volunteered labor, training, sourcing, patterning, warehousing and shipping just in case there are more orders than we can handle and meet our delivery promise.
We also have access to their network of subcontracted production and fulfillment companies. But rest assured, every Challenge Bear will be worked on by our Veterans, and all proceeds will go to the GreenVetsLA program.
We have prepared for the event that if demand exceeds our expectations we are ready with additional materials and resources ensuring that we can expand production capacity at our program. On both tasks, our Vets are a “GO!”
Sometimes as sewing projects go to manufacturing, we determine slight modifications that may improve the efficiency of production. For this reason, minor modifications in design or form may be done on the Bear, but we will do our best to maintain the lovable shape, design, feel and durability.
CAN LOGISTICAL PROBLEMS HAPPEN?
Have the cloth mill and the webbing weaver run out of the colors we need? Could our embroidery machine break down on the first production run? Yes, but all Veterans know that the best way to be prepared is to have a backup! And we have located backups for every part, machine and supply that we can think of here!
A huge advantage to MADE IN AMERICA bears are that you don’t have to worry about shipping delays from products crossing the seas to get here. While we will try our best to avoid ANY delays in the delivery date, we will be 100% transparent with any updates or changes. We’ll also be sending you updates throughout the production and shipping process to keep you posted on progress!
OUR COMMITMENT TO QUALITY
We have got this covered! Some of the advisors on this project have sewn parachute packs and medical harnesses for the military – these are people who understand quality. The factory that advises and backstops our program is ISO 9001:2008 certified, which is the gold standard for industrial sewing manufacturing. Our Veterans learn their processes from working under this system. This means is that each Challenge Bear will be built on time and to the high specifications of our program.
All of this is incredibly important to us, but we’re also committed to your happiness. We’re here to do everything we possibly can to make your challenge as memorable and fantastic as possible. If there is anything we can do to make your adventure better, please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org or on the good, old-fashioned telephone at 424-219-0799 and ask for Jim, Jodi or Deirdre.
