About

Welcome to Taking of Taidian! This exciting deck-building game is for 2-6 players, ages 13+. A complete game takes approximately 90 minutes to play.

Taking of Taidian (pronounced Tie-Dee-N) is character based and set in the near future. Throughout the course of a game, players are given a plethora of exciting choices. This makes Taking of Taidian unique and highly replay-able.

The game is designed to encourage table talk and group strategy. Build your own deck while keeping your eyes open to what others are doing. Each player starts with a deck of cards that represents their life and personality. Individual cards have specific properties that become increasingly important throughout the game (e.g. defense cards will keep you alive, while energy cards allow you to power-up). As the game progresses, players have the ability to buy new or better cards.

The goal of the game is to be the last person or team standing. Table talk and trash talk are not only allowed, but encouraged. Have fun while making your friends hate you.

Why did I design this game?

The short answer is because I love games. The longer answer is that as a teacher I was looking for a way to encourage one of my classes to do their homework. I wanted characters they could upgrade and buy things for. I also wanted the characters to have interesting backstories.

Why a deck-builder?

I really enjoy deck-building games. I like the way that deck-building mixes strategy and chance. One problem I found with some of the deck-building games I played was that the games tended to be very self-focused. You might play with a group of six people and no one says anything except, “It is your turn.” or “Drop a card.” In Taking of Taidian you need to pay attention to what others are doing and you might need to talk your way out of tight situations.

Why is table-talk so important?

In the U.S. and around the world it seems there are huge holes in our communication. We have all these awesome new ways of communicating, but it seems many of us have lost the ability to listen. People often simply talk over one another. All you need to do is watch the U.S presidential debates or read about Brexit to see that people are not hearing each other. I am not so naïve to think that this game, which if I am really lucky will be played by a few thousand people, is going to change the trend. But maybe if we can get more people learning to disagree, make strategies, talk trash and work things out in the safety of a game maybe just maybe people can start hearing each other in other areas of life.

Taking of Taidian draws in players with its intriguing backstory. Each character in the game is accompanied by a tale of intrigue.

The story begins with Dr. Williams who, while looking for a way to use lightning as a renewable energy source, discovered a way to fuse the energy with the human body, radically improving the abilities of those who used his serum. Williams quickly saw the potential to help others, but he also knew that his research could be used as a weapon if it fell into the wrong hands. Williams gave his project the code name “Taidian” – the Chinese word for power. He secretly set up a lab in northwestern Venezuela. Despite his best efforts, however, Williams could not keep Taidian a secret. Several governments and private organizations learned about Williams’ research and sent their best people to take control of the doctor and his research.

In Taking of Taidian, players choose to play as one of ten different characters as they fight for the control of the POWER. Win as a team or take everything for yourself!

In Part One of the backstory, you will learn about RedNight, NewDay and Jonny.

Risks and challenges

If everything runs smoothly, games will be delivered in early April. As this is the first game we have published, there are things that may take longer than expected and unforeseen obstacles that may crop up and cause delays. The good news is that we have been working on this game for over a year and a half. We are very invested and will work through anything to make sure we get our backers a quality game that they’ll enjoy playing over and over again.
Although the stretch goal artwork isn’t quite finished, our artist works quickly and is committed to the project. If we reach our goals, he will be sure to deliver great looking art in a timely manner.
The complete backstory has been written but is still only a rough draft. The length after editing should be around 150 pages.
We are still working out what the health and energy markers will look like. We are in contact with several manufacturers and should have a final draft soon.
We are excited to get Taking of Taidian into your hands!
