About this project
UPDATE - We completed product testing over the weekend, testing impact resistance from extreme heights. Check out the video here:

mentalKase(tm) is an iPhone case with the material advantage of high quality, durable, shock resistant and antimicrobial foam rubber. Nothing protects sensitive electronics from shock and impact like micro-cell rubberized foam (MCRF). MCRF antimicrobial properties, protects you and your loved ones from handfuls of germs.
The founders of mentalKase(tm) have been working together for two years to design and develop foam cases suitable for iPhones. What we have now are production samples of the iPhone 4/4s model ready for final textures and colors. Our target goal also allows us to design and develop an iPhone 5 version as well as deliver iPhone 4/4s. In a limited production run, the Kickstarter mentalKase(tm) will be black and white.
Foam is superior for impact resistance (think impact absorbing bounce instead of a hard shock) and offers additional benefits like being inherently anti-microbial. Since foam is mostly air, its very lightweight and keeps iPhones buoyant. This first version of mentalKase(tm) is not waterproof, but your phone will be bobbing on top of the water so you can pick it up! We think this is the perfect way to protect your phone when you are out doing the things you love to do.
In addition to a superior material, the founders of mentalKase(tm) worked with a leading design firm to deliver something special. We have a patented multi-layer case - TPU plastic provides a snug fit to the phone which is wrapped in EVA foam delivering superior shock and impact resistance. We also include an EVA foam base so you can stow your phone fully protected.
What's really unique about this design (we have patents pending) is that you can stow the phone face down - protecting the screen while allowing access to the headphone jack - or face out, giving the phone serious bounce protection while retaining full functionality.
In addition to being a great material for protecting sensitive electronic devices, our foam is anti-microbial. We could really gross you out by telling you what's all over your phone - but we'll sum it up this way. If you're like us you wash your hands before you eat, yet you touch your phone all day long. It is said that infectious bacteria can live on surfaces for up to 17 days. Need more? Watch the video and find out what Anderson Cooper had lurking on his phone.
Foam is commonly used to protect the most sensitive parts of people – and is in everything from helmets, to seat cushions to the soles of athletic shoes. We think its the best material to protect sensitive electronic devices.
If foam is obviously such a great material for phone and device protection why aren’t more companies making foam cases today? Because designing and manufacturing a foam case is deceptively difficult. The foam actually grows in the mold, kind of like a marshmallow in a microwave - and we have several patents on the process.
What you see in the video are production line iPhone 4/4s prototypes. These molds are complete. Your donations go straight into product because all of the R&D for iPhone 4s and iPhone 4 is done. When we hit our target we place the order with our Chinese manufacturer and we roll straight into production with this model. While we are tooling up for iPhone 4/4s - we will finish the iPhone 5 design and be able to deliver both in March, after Chinese New Year.
• Superior impact resistance •Anti-bacterial • Scuff and mark resistant • Water resistance • Dust resistance • Insulated from hot & cold temperatures • Virtually rip and tear proof • Color won’t fade in the sun • And it floats.
This is not a waterproof case, but if you do drop it in water, you’ll be able to pick you phone up right off the surface.
Please place your donation today and put mentalKase into production!
Thank you Kickstarters!
Risks and challenges
The founders of mentalKase(tm) are all experienced entrepreneurs and business people. Between the founders we have several patents and decades of experience in high scale manufacturing and distribution. Working with foam is not easy - its a deceptively complicated process as the foam actually grows in the mold (like a marshmallow in a microwave). We spent the better part of a year and invested tens of thousands of dollars working with our manufacturer to refine the design and the manufacturing process so we can share these production line samples with the Kickstarter community. These are not one-off prototypes, these samples were built in the factory using factory tooling.
In addition to having final design and manufacturing ready to go, we are connected to a third party logistics (3PL) provider to ship the product to our backers.
That said, there are risks involved. We are still tweaking the design to achieve the desired levels of dirt and water resistance. There are often delays in the manufacturing process, and we are going to be very strict on quality control which could delay delivery.
We've invested a ton of time, money and resources before we came to Kickstarter to do everything in our power to ensure that we can deliver a high quality product on time.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
