Who are we?
HSBNE Inc is Australia's first Hackerspace & is physically one of the largest in the world. We are not-for-profit community-focused organisation funded by membership fees, donations & grants, where people with common interests get together, interact and collaborate to turn their ideas into reality. For more information visit: www.hsbne.org
The title and the video say it all - we want to significantly increase the community's involvement & understanding of technology as well as support all the innovation and creativity Brisbane has to offer. We want to establish a space where ideas become reality & amazing things are created. A place where people with interests in programming, electronics, firmware, software, RC vehicles, UAVs, cars, mechatronics, robotics, 3D printing, PCB-etching, metal-casting, woodworking, art, design and many more activities all come together and interact with each. We believe that there is an unlimited amount of creativity and innovation all around us and we want to provide as many tools & resources we can to facilitate the development of great projects in our community.
We are committed to this project, and most importantly, we are not starting from scratch. All the money we receive will be used solely to improve our campus, fix our existing equipment, purchase additional tools & machinery as well as organise events for the benefit of our members and the community. Below you can see some of the key rooms & equipment already available at the Space. Just imagine how much better we can make HSBNE with your support!
Building 1 (Main Building)
The green room: this is where most of our members come together. You can find a variety of hand tools, 3D printers, soldering irons, oscilloscopes, a large laser cutter, a pcb etcher, a CNC router and work benches with multiple computers around the room.
Classroom: once organised, the classroom will be able to accommodate up to 30 people & will allow regular workshops to take place. The classroom also doubles as a green-screen room which is incredibly handy for any film or photography enthusiast.
Game Room: Yes we have a game room! Filled with a mix of modern to retro consoles, including a MAME arcade cabinet & a Vectrex. Get your game on with Guitar Hero on a large Plasma screen or go old-school with the original NES's Duck Hunt on a proper CRT TV.
Member Storage: Locked to non-members room with full audit logs & video surveillance, this room is the place to store your stuff.
Blacksmithing: This skill is more than just melting metal at hundreds of degrees & whacking it with a hammer. At HSBNE you can cast & work with any metals our furnaces can melt. Some of our members even manufacture items out of old soft drink cans. How's that for direct recycling!
Woodworking: Cutting, hammering, sawing, routing, carving, sanding, drilling, planing, this room is where wood goes from planks to products.
Breaker Room: Set aside for project assembly & general use, this houses our gigantic 1m², 3-phase Kiln for firing porcelain & clay.
Metalworking: Our best equipped room, the metalworking room houses lathes, a manual mill, metal bandsaw, linisher & welding equipment.
The Warehouse: The warehouse is our giant, general purpose room. It holds our two-ton Gantry, a full sized car grease pit and a massive printer that is being converted into an automated plasma cutter.
Thank You !!!
We are very grateful for your support and as one of your rewards we will send you a very special laser engraved "Thank You" plaque.
Out of gift ideas? Or just feel like there is something missing in your house? How about we use our plotter and/or laser engraver to create a cool version of one or more of your favorite photographs. The plotter will be used with thick high quality paper, while the laser engraver can be used with either MDF (medium density fiberboard) plywood or acrylic.
Want to learn about 3D printing ? Do it in the best way possible: Building your own printer!! (and/or sign up for our 3d Printer workshops ;)
The Prusa i3 is the latest design available from the open source RepRap community. Learn about the mechanics, the electronics and the software of these fascinating machines. We can laser cut the frame for you out of MDF (medium density fiberboard) plywood or acrylic, then you can start sourcing the rest of the components and you will be assembling your 3d printer in no time. For further information on the Prusa i3 and list of components visit http://reprap.org/wiki/Prusa_i3.
Use your imagination !!! Think of what else you might be able to do with our laser cutter!! Get inspiration and digital files to be laser cut from websites such as http://www.thingiverse.com/ and let your creativity loose.

We are offering classes in:
$ 6,000 This will go towards:
Fixing existing equipment: We already have a significant number of great machines at our disposal, however, some of them need some replacement parts to be able to work at an optimum and safe level.
Painting: We have acquired some quotes to revamp our space by repainting the exterior walls of the buildings on the premises. As a first stage, we will paint the most prominent walls. Once we acquire more funding we will proceed to finish the rest.
$15,000 This will go towards:
New equipment: We plan to make HSBNE the ultimate community creative and innovation hub, so it is fundamental that we be equipped with new and innovative machines. At the moment we feel like the most critical machines we need are:
a reliable easy to use high resolution (25 micron) 3D printer. This printer will able to produce incredibly high resolution 3D prints and will be a very valuable addition to the Space;
a portable Bukito 3d printer: We would love to get a light, solid and portable 3d printer to be able to take around at events, schools and move around in our classes. Such printer will serve as a valuable tool to bring HSBNE directly to the community;
$25,000 This will go towards:
New equipment: Cool additions to our machine collection will be:
- a 4 Axis CNC Machine
- a vacuum forming machine
Final renovations We will make the space more pleasant and enjoyable by continuing repainting the external walls of the buildings as well as adding more lights and light features.
Risks and challenges
HSBNE's biggest challenge will be to keep our renovation on schedule for our relaunch party on the 10th of January. There is a lot of cleaning, painting, fixing & moving to do. We are confident that with our reliable members & your support we will be able to organise everything on time.
We plan on releasing weekly updates showing our progress through photos, videos & messages so that all you supporters will be kept constantly informed.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
