The hipjib idea is strikingly simple and will open cameramen and -women completely new shooting dimensions: with the size of just two fists, hipjib enables beautifully steady camera movements and mobile camera stability. It instantly creates the comforting feeling of solid support and freedom of movement.
hipjib is all about speed, stability, and flexibility.
A robust and compact construction, hipjib features an attachment made from high-quality polyamide. Attached in seconds to the waist via a belt you only need to plant an ordinary tripod or monopod into it and start shooting right away. What hipjib can do:
1. Replacing a conventional camera shoulder rig by offering even more stability and flexibility, at a fraction of the weight and cost.
2. Enabling extremely smooth vertical camera movements reaching from the ground up to approximately 2.5 meters (6.5 feet) or higher, depending on the type of videohead used. This feature outperforms any expensive and bulky jibarm and its assembly on location.
3. Smooth multi-directional camera movements in a combination of tripod or monopod, tripod head, and body action. In short: hipjib's strengths come into play in situtations where speed, improvisation, and flexibility are crucial.
Bring your own tripod: any ordinary tripod or monopod with video head, the legs’ rubber base not exceeding a diameter of 37mm (1.46 inches), a video camera weighing up to appr. 2.5 kilos, and a camera operator with a fondness of light baggage and dynamic camera action.
hipjib weighs 300 grams (0.88 pd), is 25 cm (10 inches) long, and 5 cm (2 inches) in diameter.
hipjib was created by award winning photographer and cameraman Gert Wagner, traveling the globe on countless assignments covering themes like sports, nature, documentaries, corporate, education. The hipjib idea was born out of tough shooting conditions demanding flexibility yet generating superb results at a moment's notice.
hipjib is attached to the body via a waist belt or, alternatively, with shoulder straps with varying adjustment options. Due to its small size and little weight you will hardly notice it. Almost any normal tripod will fit by planting two of its legs, or the single leg of a monopod, into hipjib. The tripod head should have the video function of horizontal and vertical camera movements. While one hand holds on to the tripod the other directs tripod head and camera. The cushioned turning axle inside hipjib lets the tripod smoothly pivot vertically while the tripod head can simultaneously be moved into any direction: you now have total control over horizontal, vertical, hovering, and tilt movements. Operation is easy, intuitive, safe, instantly acquired – and great fun!
Further, in between takes you will be glad to learn that hipjib supports holding your camera with no extra effort. You are ready to shoot again at a moment's notice - ideal for documentaries and journalism.
For wider pans and extreme action shots, a video monitor may be attached to the tripod with the included monitor clip.
VIDEO-UPDATE #1: Here is a new demo-video of shots taken from moving vehicles - something that you could not do with a tripod or jibarm alone. When things are shaky around you, hipjib gives you stability as well as great flexibility.
VIDEO-UPDATE #2: Just to demonstrate the vital difference even slight camera moves can make, here is a brief selection of landscape scenes all taken with hipjib. With the small and light hipjib in your backpack or around your waist, you don't have to carry a sturdy jib in addition to your standard tripod, but you will have the effect all the same and even more: hipjib lets your camera move sideways, too. We have used hipjib for most of our nature documentaries throughout the last few years and enjoyed the freedom it gave us in tricky terrain and on long hikes.
VIDEO-UPDATE #3: In this video we have put together some footage of shots where bringing a regular jib is simply not an option. hipjib's versatility, weight, and size, however, makes it possible for you to perform smooth camera-movements even under these conditions.
VIDEO-UPDATE #4: On corporate video sets, it's all about unpredictability, improvisation, narrow spaces, limited time, and usually (very) limited budgets. That sounds like a field day for hipjib!
VIDEO-UPDATE #5: Meet our final prototype in full 3d-animated glamour in a sneak preview:
hipjib – your camera unchained.
The money raised on Kickstarter will cover at least 50% of costs for tools and will help financing the larger quantities of raw material necessary to gain an attractive price per unit. Any contribution will help launching a product that will open new perspectives to cinematographers.
WHAT THEY SAY...
We asked a number of cameramen and film productions to test hipjib under their special working conditions and we received an overwhelmingly positive response that inspired us to go all the way and persue large scale production. Particularly our photographer friends that also offer film production with their video capable DSLR cameras enjoyed hipjib's smooth and dynamic handling with minimum effort.
"As a film production company creating documentaries, commercials, and videoclips we are always open for innovations improving efficiency and creativity. When first testing a hipjib prototype it took us only minutes to recognize the potential of this simple idea and to spontaneously applying it. Obviously, there is plenty of camera experience behind this stunningly effective accessory that will enchant many a filmmaker. Especially for our small teams having to be fast and flexible with continuously changing perspectives on location, hipjib should be an efficient solution for stable and at the same time dynamic camera handling."
Knut Sodemann, Multivision, Hamburg
"The practicability of hipjib has convinced me instantly. Especially when traveling, this effective little gadget saves me time, considerably reduces my baggage, and ignites my creativity when freely moving my camera. Great idea!"

Risks and challenges
hipjib is engineered by experts with extensive background in the manufacturing process of plastic devices. Once the tools for the polyamide parts are ready for production, manufacturing of even larger quantities is ensured. We require approximately two months time until shipment of the first orders.
The functionality of various hipjib prototypes has been tested, improved, and refined throughout numerous video productions by several acclaimed camera operators. hipjib has come a long way maturing into what it is today. It was born and raised in the trenches of modern video production. It has inspired the ones who had a chance to work with it and is ready to take on many more. We would like to thank you for interest and support and hope that you too one day will tie a hipjib around your waist.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
