About this project
Should we be lucky enough to meet our initial goal we have plans for several layers of extra content that will help make The Fez Documentary all the more rich.
The first authentic Arabic Supperclub in Hollywood, California that became an icon of its time, famous around the world for it's food, it's atmosphere, and of course, for it's music and dance.
Opened in 1959 by Lou Shelaby, the Fez went on to feature many Arabic musicians and Belly Dancers who have gone on to inspire generations of dancers around the world.
The Fez in an integral part of our dance history.
For over 3 years, I (Roxxanne Shelaby) have been working on creating a documentary that chronicles the history of the Fez, and it's importance to both as the place where Arabic music, dance and culture flourished and became the center of the Arabic community while introducing the general American public to the mysterious Middle East
Until now the creation of the documentary has been largely funded with my own money. In July 2013 we held a fundraiser show, which raised about $2,500 dollars which was used to fund the filming of the interviews that are the heart of our documentary.
However, now those interviews, and all the footage I've managed to collect needs to be edited together into an actual film! I don't want to just toss clips together and call it done, but actually work towards creating a high quality film that will teach dancers and non-dancers alike the important place that the Fez held in American, and dance History for years to come.
Our initial goal is $20,000 but we hope that we'll be able to surpass that goal and have a budget to produce some extra content for the film.
We want you to know exactly what your money is funding. We've pared down the budget as much as possible to provide beautifully made products as rewards & still get our editing budget covered. Making a movie is expensive!
Every penny will be used to further The Fez Documentary in some form or fashion, be it to the actual editing, or to creation of a brand that will draw attention and place us in the professional sphere, your dollars will help us make this film!
Remember, nothing can happen without your help!
Donate & spread the word far and wide, and together we can make this documentary an amazing learning tool for dance history.
My father was Lou Shelaby, owner of The Fez Supperclub. I grew up among the dancers and musicians of The Fez and hearing their stories.
Even today I hear about the Fez from not only the musicians and dancers but by random people who I meet on the street who spent one magical night (or more) at The Fez.
I have spent my life studying Arabic dance, teaching, performing and producing events. Along the way, I have been collecting these stories, photos and feelings with the knowledge that one day I would do something with them.
After a series of events it became clear that I needed to weave them together into this documentary to share with others so they can experience the magic of the Fez, a showcasing of Arabic music, dance and culture at its finest!
There are some great rewards for our backers listed below! Here is an explanation of some of the items, with the tiers following!
It's what you're all here for! The best reward is of course, the documentary itself! Not only will you receive a copy of the DVD shipped to your home, but you'll also be listed in the credits as a contributor to the film!
As part of several of the tiers are these rewards.
Tickets to Premier: The premier of The Fez Documentary will take place on June 7th, 2015 at Cairo Shimmyquake in Los Angeles, California. Backers of tiers that receive tickets will be able to pick their tickets up at the door and will be treated to some of the best seats in the house!
Online Showing: Now we know that not everyone lives in LA, so hitting up the premier isn't necessarily an option! So we'll be hosting an online showing that will be exclusive to all of our Kickstarter backers. We'll hold the viewing & follow it up with a Q&A with Roxxanne to answer any questions you have about the film or The Fez!
These are some of the most exciting prizes! We've collected materials during the research for The Fez that you're going to love! All of these items will be given as digital downloads.
Lou's Bellydance Handbook: My father compiled several notes about what to do to be a bellydancer. What songs to dance to, what skills were needed, etc. It's a great collection of tips for any dancer!
The Fez Photobook: I've been able to collect tons of photos from the days of The Fez and this digital PDF will present as many of those photos as possible for you! A treasure trove of vintage photos & history!
The Fez Recipes: My Sittou (Grandmother) was the head chef at the Fez, bringing her traditional Lebanese cuisine for all to enjoy! In this digital cookbook we'll be providing some of her recipes straight from the The Fez menu!
Our logo will be printed on a high quality tri-blend shirt in water based red ink and complete with sparkles! The design is soft and won't break off or crack as time goes on. The sparkle also has a really good wash life, being embedded into the fabric of the shirt with the water based technique. Water based printing is also more environmentally friendly than plastisol inks, which is always a bonus!
For this reward Roxxanne will come to your city to teach a 2 hour workshop on "The Fez Routine"! In addition to the workshop guests will receive a myriad of rewards themselves, making your workshop a fantastic value! Travel and lodging costs are NOT included. Must be booked in 2015.
Risks and challenges
We have already collected all the footage for the documentary so the content isn't a problem. Our biggest challenge is raising the funds to pay for the editing to get the film finished in time for it's premier on June 7th. Our editor is an incredible dance film maker and will get the job done!
We will do everything necessary to get this project done on time. We've got a great team working on this, and we're positive it's going to happen!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
