About A Phoenix First Must Burn
“In order to rise from its own ashes, a Phoenix first must burn.” —Octavia Butler
The past few years have brought the injustices suffered by people of color into sharp relief. Not just because people of color are being victimized and killed, but because when people of color rightly bring attention to the realities of their situation, they are shouted down by white people, and their experiences erased.
The daily lived reality of people of color is drastically different than that of white people, and therefore a future where society is upset will look very different to them. Authors will explore how "dystopia" changes with that change of viewpoint.
In the past, we haven't paid our writers for our anthologies (these are different than our journal, NonBinary Review, for which we do pay). The anthologies have been released for free, and anyone can download them. But we would like to pay our authors for this new anthology.
Our goal of $1,000 will pay 25 authors 1 cent per word for stories averaging 4,000 words. Because every penny will go to our authors, more money raised means more money paid to our authors! Everyone wins!
Risks and challenges
As a press, we already have a following and people who submit work to us, and have successfully brought other anthologies to press, but this project is dependent on enough people of color submitting quality work that we can reach our minimum goal of 25 stories. We have regular channels for our calls for submissions, and we're hoping that if we can offer professional pay, we can attract top-notch writers.
We've also got deep and wide connections in the publishing community, and are familiar with outreach into groups of writers in this specialty.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
