About this project
It's the roaring twenties and thirties, there are rackets to be controlled and mugs to whack. And here you are, with a brand new violin case full of trouble...
The basic premise is simple, you build your "family" with Thugs, Bookies and Torpedos (collectively known as Mugs.) that will help you gain and keep control of rackets. The hook with this game is the HIT DIE system. When you roll your dice, characters die. And everyone is rolling HIT DICE, so you need to protect your Mugs or you will lose your rackets. The game gets, shall we say, "dicey"? And there are risks you can take, cards or options played at the right time that allows you to win BIG.
The goal: 2 of the same racket type or 3 different type rackets win the game.
And there are 120 cards of strategy so every game is different!
It's a traditional card game for 2-6 players, with the addition of expansion cards, you can have up to 8 players. It takes about 20 minutes to play with 4 players. All of the cards have the game rules on them, so there is not a lot of "stopping the game to look up a rule" moments.
SAMPLE BASIC GAMEPLAY:
I outlined the opponent's die results to your "family", your die roll probably affected your opponent's "family", as well as your retaliation roll. I just went straight to the tallying of the remaining point totals of both players for the final result. Check out the video below for another example of a racket round being played.
Who am I?
Skip this if my pedigree doesn't matter to you and it's the game you are interested in...---------------------------------
My name is Dan Smith, aka Smif. I have been a notable fixture in gaming since the 1990's, having done illustration work for a number of game/ non game companies in the past.
By day I am a graphic designer, illustrator and... wait for it...card and board game designer. (I create engines for other creatives and companies, as well as my own company.)
I created the Origins nominees for best traditional card game Battle of the Bands:Encore Edition and Backstage Pass for best traditional expansion. Some reviews for my games:
Battle of the Bands
Portable Adventures Set 1: Lair of the Rat-King
Portable Adventures Set 2: 8th Grade
Since then I have been making card games for fun and family, and now, with you, we can get some of them out to the world. King of Crime is my favorite card game, regardless that I made it. It has moments during gameplay that make the table "explode" with laughter, dismay and triumph!
My philosophy about game design is this: Gaming is primarily a socially shared experience, physically being across from an opponent is key to a fun time.
There are so many other outlets for your "free" time, that playing with the sole intent of "crushing" your opponent seems one sided in the end. They aren't smiling after it's over.
Someone is going to win, but having fun has always been the prime motivation behind my games. If a passerby, hearing the game being played, doesn't stop and want to be in on it, I haven't done my job.
Here are some of my sites:
End of sermon.-----------------------------------------
I love games! I dream about them, I talk about them, I love playing them and I love making them. And you don't create games in a vacuum. Kickstarter is the new hub of game creators.
That you love games, too, is obvious...you are reading this. :) With Kickstarter, you also will have a hand in creating and being a part of this game, some of the rewards include you being a character in the game, as a thug, bookie or torpedo! And for those who like to get your hands dirty in the process, create a card for the game!
EMAIL ME and I will send you the 2 player demo game, print it out, put the cards in sleeves with backing...play the game! There is no guessing if you will like it or not, I'm that sure of this game! (And it will set you thinking of what kind of character you would want to be!)
The game is done, the art is done. It's been playtested extensively, and ready for print, all we need to do is pay the printer and the postal service.
The delivery date will be June at the very latest, barring any g-man interference.
Because I am printing just down the street from me, the turnaround time should be really fast...I am saying June when it will probably be May or sooner. But I always expect red lights while delivering the games to the post office. ;)
This will be a 30 day campaign, PLEASE TELL YOUR FRIENDS THAT LOVE TO GAME ABOUT THIS PROJECT. My updates will be about the great things that I can show about the game during the campaign.
Any reposting help is always appreciated, and will help us make the stretch goals below, many are special mini expansion sets and cards...plus, if we get our goals high enough, everyone will get the full 60 card MONSTER KING OF CRIME EXPANSION- 1930's monsters joing your "family" to carve out a new racket-TERROR!
Look to your right for the specific levels...
With this game, I have some special opportunities for kickstarters including inclusion into the game! These include:
You can own original black and white artwork from the game.
If you are interested in this reward, please be ready with your first 10 choices, first come, first served. (Caveat: Some of these characters are in expansion sets found in the stretch goals and if we don't fund that high, you will own a character you may not be represented in the game. Just sayin, folks.)
You can have a special sets of infamous BAD GUYS, GOOD GUYS and some really cool cards called THE BLACK HAND! And, if you want them all, they will be grouped together along with some cool necessary cards in the WHOLE KIT & KABOODLE 54 card expansion
You can be a character in the game as a thug, bookie, torpedo and there is room for 1 BOSS! (limited amount of character slots available!) I will draw you in the KoC style, your name and something witty for text and everyone will fight to have you representing their family for that battle over Bathtub Gin! (You also get the framed, signed, original character art, too!) And you will get name credit on the card as well!
WHERE DOES THE MONEY GO?
Our basic goal allows us to have the game in a tuck box. As we progress higher up the funding ladder, those funds will allow us to upgrade to a sturdy, full color, 2 piece nestled box which will allow for holding up to ALL of the expansions as sleeved cards as well as the dice needed for play. Upgrades for the Racket round token and other sundries as they come up in the campaign. And of course all of the printing and packaging of all the rewards and stretch goals. (Funding will also cover the extra shipping charges that will occur if we start hitting the upper stretch goals, escpecialy for our international funders.) If I make some money for all of the hard work that went into designing the game, laying out the cards, and packaging, drawing and coloring the art, etc, that would be nice too.
TOM VASEL looked over the pre production version of King of Crime last year.
Add ons to your funding
And because my ego is so huge, there are the crazy rewards.
You can have me show up at your convention/store/home/whatever... (2 days) and we can game KoC, BotB, PA, or anything you want to. (I won't play RISK, sorry.) (I'll bring the NDAs and you can game some of my upcoming games in progress-playtester status! And if you contribute to the gameplay...partner percentage? (We'll talk.)
We can discuss gaming, comicbooks, art, music, movies, planet of the apes (the original)...I will doodle, you can try and beat me at pool (Heck, I'll even let you win!), the possibilities are (almost) endless. (Crimes will only be committed on the gaming table. ;).)
If you actually go for any of these life changing rewards, you will automatically be a character in King of Crime! Perks, perks and more perks!

King of Crime is printed in the USA.
Risks and challenges
The risks and challenges of this venture is very low. (Barring acts of God.) I have been doing this for a very long time, I know what to do, how to do it and whom to help me get it done. There is no chaos factor here, folks, just the hurdle at the end when the check is due.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
