What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

Proof of Concept

Explorations that test ideas and functionality.

Functional Prototype

Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.

Appearance Prototype

Looks like the final product, but is not functional.

Design Prototype

Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.

Production Prototype

Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.

About this project

THE BASIC IDEA

Last year I married my wife on a beautiful island in Denmark. The danish people on this island have little wooden shelfs in front of their small single family houses. In those shelfs they sell home-grown vegetables or cookies, sometimes even handcrafted souvenirs.

Each thing in these shelfs had a little price tag and there was a little money box to pay as well. That was when I got really interested in this idea, the people of this island don't waste anything, what they can spare they simply sell.

THE IDEA AFTER MATURE DELIBERATION

After many sleepless nights and days the idea grew into something I actually think will be very successful if implemented right. I want to provide you a completely outline of what I planned and hope to turn into reality.

This whole idea should be avaiable as App for Android and iPhone as well as regular Website or Webapp. As name I have choosen "eShelf", regarding to the physical shelfs from Denmark.

The App and the Website will provide you a personal virtual shelf where you can offer your products. You can create as much eShelfs as you want to organize your products.

Users can contact you and make you wether an offer or normally buy it. Via a message system you can fix a date and where to pick it up.

Additionally you can fill your sellers profile out with further informations such as you offer delivery, orders and a timeframe within you are able to produce your products to deliver fresh. (example: pastries etc.)

After each successful trade, you can rate the seller and the buyer. Furthermore you will be able to rate each single product you purchased.

To find nearby sellers I will provide a map within a range and many sort options you can look for specific products.

WHO AM I?

I'm a 29 years old computer science student from Germany with plenty of ideas but not enough life time and resources to create all the cool stuff flying around in my mind. But instead of abandon these little symbolic bubbles, doomed to burst, I want to try my luck on Kickstarter.

WHY DO WE NEED AN APP LIKE THAT?

You might think why do we need that, I could simply sell my stuff on Ebay or in one of those other platforms existing in plethora. And of course you could. But, all those platforms are firstly, not made for purposes like that and you have to fight yourself through tons of other products and you might not even find the right thing. People on those platforms are simply not looking for stuff like that. Also because of the big scale of products on those pages they have restrictions that might not allow you to offer anything like we want to provide.

So let me tell you the main reasons why this app is such a good idea to you in a short form:

  • Instead of wasting what we don't consume, we can simply turn in to money
  • Self-provided goods like pastries are usually much more healthy than processed foods
  • Self-grown vegetables and fruits usually do not contain chemicals
  • We are able to share homemade products based on family traditions
  • I get feedback for my cooking, baking or other skills
  • We get in contact with our neighbors and we can provide something for the whole community or neighborhood

FOR WHAT DO I NEED THE MONEY?

  • Living expenses (Because I will focus completely on the developing)
  • Domain costs, hosting
  • (Additionally) Backend Programmer/ Marketing Help
  • All the money that exceeds the origin goal will be spend in additional working power, Backend Developer/Marketing/Frontend Developer

CAN I HELP?

Yes, please if you have any feedback regarding to the project let it me know :)

Features of the Website and/or App

- Full profile including profilepicture, preferences, dislikes, offers, ratings, contact information (hidden), friends

- Message System

- Geolocation, showing products in your range...

- Rating System

- everything for free

*The Prototypes are not very complex yet and are definitly not final in design as well

Risks and challenges

There are some obstacles I have to overcome in order to make this project successful. Firstly the app and the website does need a well working backend system to handle registrations and interactions fast.

Because my skilly are primarely limited to the frontend I need time to build up the needed backend skills and seek for help
I will spend a major part of the finances on getting help with the backend and also marketing, the rest will be for my living expenses. I will work full time on that project to ensure the delivery the best quality and finishing the final project until end of this year.

I will set my financial goal on Kickstarter to an amount I will be capable of realizing this App and Website with one additional backend developer.
Because of that I can assure every backer that I will realize this entire project regardless if there will be more raised or not.
All money that exceeds the goal I will spend in additional employees, that includes extra Frontend Developer and someone for Marketing purposes. That will fasten the whole development.
I hope I could gain some interest and thank you all for looking at my project :)
