A site-specific smartphone app that will infuse the landmark Eldridge Street Synagogue with the voices of past congregants.

Storywalks at Eldridge Street is a site-specific smartphone app that will infuse the landmark Eldridge Street Synagogue with the voices of past congregants.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dedicated in 1887, the Eldridge Street Synagogue is a breath-taking National Historic Landmark that was a place of sanctuary, support, and inspiration for thousands of Jewish immigrants living on or near New York City’s Lower East Side.

Storywalks at Eldridge Street is a one-of-a-kind smartphone app and audio tour composed from a collection of rare oral history recordings with past congregants; it will make these voices available to the public for the first time.

The app will use cutting-edge interactive technology to guide you along a sonic pathway of voices, music, and environmental sounds, exposing the synagogue’s architectural treasures, fascinating history, and long musical tradition.

But Storywalks can’t happen without your help.

Storywalks began with a budget of zero as a collaborative project-development internship with the Museum at Eldridge Street. Now we need to raise funds to make this idea happen.

As artists and recent graduates of NYU’s Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP) at the Tisch School of the Arts, we have a passion for creating experiences that lie at the intersection of art and education. Carlin is a creative writer who uses archival media and the latest expressive technologies to tell stories about ordinary lives. Anna is a visual artist with a background in animation whose work with collections and series excavates the extraordinary slumbering within the mundane.

To create the experience of our dreams, we need to hire a developer who has the expertise to build a boundary-pushing smartphone app. The funds we raise through Kickstarter will cover this work, the design and build of custom sensors, and professional sound engineering.

We began developing the app in January, finished our first prototype in May, and intend to complete work by August, in time for the synagogue’s 125th anniversary in September.

Please help us restore these voices to this exquisite sanctuary and bring history to life.
