About this project
Horrible Hauntings: An Augmented Reality Collection of Ghosts and Ghouls lets you watch ghosts come to life by looking at the book through your iOS or Android device after downloading a free app! This marriage of beautiful book and cutting-edge app promises to be a first in U.S. publishing, and it's coming from the fledgling press, Goosebottom Books.
How did such a small press come to have such a huge opportunity? Well, I'm Shirin Yim Bridges, the Head Goose of Goosebottom Books, and my brother, Jason Yim, just happens to be a leading creative director who implements these technologies for the movie studios and big commercial brands. He showed me what augmented reality (AR) can do, and said, wouldn't that make a great ghost book?
YES IT WOULD. Kids love ghosts and ghost books, and now they will be able to see the ghosts come to life. What's more, they will be able to interact with them. Blow into your mic and you'll fill the sails of the Flying Dutchman; move around the Headless Horseman, and he'll twist in his saddle to follow you; call Bloody Mary's name three times and you'll summon her in the mirror.
This book is perfectly in line with Goosebottom Books' mission: stealth education through fun non-fiction. It will be so appealing to children, they won't even notice that they're a) reading; b) learning a little about history—for each ghost is a historical ghost. (Believe it or not, this is a nonfiction book!) We believe there's no better way to improve literacy than by making it fun to read and learn.
Here are some "hauntings" in different stages of development...
And here's what the pages about the Brown Lady might look like (she's believed by many to be the first ghost caught on film). Look at these pages through your app, and you'll be able to guide her down the stairs!
Horrible Hauntings will be 24 pages, hardcover, written by the award-winning author of Ruby's Wish, The Umbrella Queen, and The Thinking Girl's Treasury of Real Princesses (me), and illustrated with luscious oil paintings by William Maughan, director of Graduate Studies in Fine Art Illustration at the Academy of Arts University, San Francisco. You will be investing in a high-quality product. You can check out the standard of the books we publish at www.goosebottombooks.com, and see the quality of Jason's AR work at www.triggerglobal.com.
So why you and why Kickstarter? Well, as you can imagine, this is one expensive project for a small company. We have everything in place. We just need to get over the last hump to see the book successfully launched. Twenty thousand dollars will pay our printing costs and leave a small budget for some publicity and marketing. You can help make this happen! You can turn to your kids and grandkids after enjoying this book together, look at the stars in their eyes, and know you've helped achieve an "industry first."
And for doing that, we're offering some wonderful rewards. Please pledge your support—you'll get a collectible, once-in-a-lifetime reward for a pledge of as little as $2!—link to this page on Facebook or pass this URL on to your friends. We'd very much appreciate it.
